Strong finish earns playoff berth
Banas, Van Den Oever spark 10-2 WSC season
The women's volleyball team rebounded from a slow start to finish second in the WSC
with a 10-2 record and earn their third straight trip to the Southern Cal Regional.
The Vaqueros (13-11) were seeded 15th for the playoffs and put up a good fight before
falling 3-1 at No. 2 El Camino.
With a freshman-dominated lineup, the Vaqueros started 2-8 with seven of the losses
against teams ranked in the state top 20. They won 11 of their last 14 with seven
3-0 sweeps.
Emily Banas, Mariah Mathews and Heidi Van Den Oever were named to the first-team
All-WSC North squad. Banas, a freshman from San Pedro, led the team in kills (189)
and aces (27). Van Den Oever was No. 7 in the conference in hitting percentage (.323)
and second-team choice Bianca Castro was 11th at .308.
Castro led the team in blocks with 12 solo and 29 assists. Freshman Rachel Stehly
was also a second-team selection.
The Vaqueros won 30 of 39 sets in conference, thanks to the solid setting of Mathews
and the defensive play of libero Mackenzie Mexico.
Ed Gover completed his 21st season as head coach. His teams are 36-6 in WSC play
over the last four years with two titles and two runner-up finishes. His career record
is 247-167.
