Vaqueros earn 2nd straight WSC title
Soos named MVP of WSC North
Chemistry carried the women’s volleyball team to a second straight WSC North title and a record-tying 21 victories in 2010.
The Vaqueros went 21-6 and were ranked No. 9 in the final state poll. They swept Canyons 3-0 in the first round of the Southern
Cal Regional for their 13th win in 14 matches.
SBCC traveled to No. 4 seed Pasadena in the second round and dropped a 3-2 decision. Pasadena beat Santa Barbara three times,
including a pair of 3-2 setbacks.
“The players are what made this year’s team special,” said coach Ed Gover. “We had a great group of kids.”
SBCC has won 21 games each of the last two years, tying the 1999 squad for most wins in a season. During that time, the Vaqueros
have won 42 of 51 matches for a winning percentage of .824.
In conference play, they won 29 of 33 sets.
Sophomore setter Kelsey Soos was named Player of the Year in the WSC North and she was joined on the six-player All-Southern
Cal Region team by Allyson Porter.
Jenn Waddill, a sophomore middle from San Marcos High, made the All-WSC first team for the second straight year. She was
the conference’s top hitter at .455. Porter also made the first team, along with Nicole Bergmann (3rd in WSC hitting, .351)
and Antonia Antes.
SBCC has been nearly perfect at home, going 7-0 this year and 13-1 last year. They’re 23-1 in the Sports Pavilion, dating
back to 2008.
“The highlight the past two years has been the home match with Moorpark,” said Gover. “Both times they were ‘have to‘ wins
after Moorpark had defeated us at their place. It was so important to take care of business at home, which we did both years.”
