Vaqueros capture WSC title
Domenichelli is Player of the Year
Jessica Domenichelli and Katie Voss sparked the SBCC women's soccer team to one of
the best seasons in school history in 2011.
The Vaqueros started 8-0 and went on to capture the first WSC North championship
in school history with an 11-1 mark. The biggest win was a 2-1 home victory over Ventura
on Nov. 1 with Voss and Domenichelli scoring the goals.
They finished at 16-3-0 to tie for the second-most wins in team history. The Vaqueros
were 7-2 at home and are 17-3-1 in their last 21 home matches.
They were seeded No. 2 for the Southern Cal Regional and suffered a tough loss to
defending state champion San Bernardino Valley in the first round. After a scoreless
game through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime, the Wolverines advanced
5-4 on penalty kicks.
The Vaqueros scored 70 goals (3.7 average) and had the No. 4 defense in the state,
allowing just 11 goals in 19 games. They were ranked No. 3 in the final state poll
and No. 13 in the nation.
Domenichelli, the WSC North Player of the Year, set school records for goals in a
season (27) and a career (52). She was No. 2 in the state with 64 points. She had
four straight hat tricks from Oct. 18-28, highlighted by a five-goal, one-assist performance
at Hancock on Oct. 25.
Voss, a transfer from San Francisco State, collected 14 goals and a school-record
16 assists.
"I'm so proud of the girls, we've been waiting a long time to get a WSC title," said
Sisterson, who's 90-31-27 in seven seasons as head coach. "The girls deserved it.
It was a great two years for Jessica, who set scoring records each year. Hopefully,
she'll move on to a four-year school and do the same thing."
Sisterson said the playoff game was disappointing and he felt his team deserved the
victory.
"We had a ball kicked off the line and their goalie made a tremendous save on a shot
by Sylvia Ibarra," he noted. "It was disappointing to lose on PKs but there's got
to be a winner and a loser in the playoffs."
Domenichelli and Voss were two of 13 sophomores on the squad. The Vaqueros will have
to replace their entire back line of defenders.
Domenichelli was Player of the Year and Sisterson was the WSC Coach of the Year for
both women and men. Voss was a first-team All-WSC choice, along with midfielder Jenna
Rubin and defenders Morgan Crumpley and Sara Tomas. Crumpley earned second-team All-American
honors from the NSCAA while Domenichelli was second-team All-West Region.
Second-team choices included Ali Raack, Nicole Payne, Jo Lawlor and Cheyenne Rodriguez,
the state's No. 8 keeper with a 0.63 goals-against average.
