Nobles is Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Keia Nobles has been selected as SBCC’s 2012-13 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received
her award at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table luncheon on Monday at Harry’s
Plaza Café.
Nobles is a sophomore on the women’s basketball team, which went 17-13 and made the
Southern Cal Regional for the eighth time in nine years. She averaged 7.0 points and
5.4 rebounds.
In the classroom, Nobles is majoring in Social Sciences. She’s completed more than
76 credits with a 3.7 GPA.
“SBCC has helped me become a better person and helped me realize that basketball
and school go together,” said Nobles, a 5-9 guard/forward from Oxnard. “You have to
find time to study and balance things out.”
Nobles redshirted her first year and her coach Sandrine Krul said she’s grown a lot
in three seasons.
“The biggest improvement that Keia made was school and basketball, everything else
is secondary,” said Krul. “She finally realized that she’s got to do the work academically.
And then she told me, ‘When you’re a really good student, the basketball part is easy.’
“The journey has not been easy for Keia but look at her now. She’s getting accolades
for academics and she’s a recruited athlete. She’s been a starter for two years. When
she made the decision to be better, her teammates became better and our program became
better. It’s like a domino effect.”
Nobles is on the President’s Honor Roll at SBCC. She’s wants to continue playing basketball
at either Notre Dame de Namur in California, Eastern Nazarene in Quincy, Mass., or
Presentation College in South Dakota.
