Bransgard, Johnson place fifth; SBCC is 17th
SBCC sophomore Erika Schaeffer finished second in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase on Saturday in the Community College State
Track & Field Championships at American River in Sacramento.
Schaeffer, who won the Southern Cal title last week, was clocked in a personal-best 11:15.53, the No. 2 mark in school history.
Courtney Anderson of American River won in 11:07.65.
Three Vaquero women placed in the top five in the state. SBCC totaled 15.5 points and finished 17th.
Elisabeth Bransgard, a freshman from Sweden, was fifth in the discus with a throw of 41.06 meters (134 feet, 8 inches) on
the last of her six attempts. It was her second-best toss of the year and the No. 5 mark in SBCC history.
Kelli Johnson, a sophomore from San Marcos High, tied for fifth in the high jump at 5-1¼.
Freshman Matt Bailey, the Vaqueros’ only state qualifier in the men’s meet, was 12th in the 1,500 meters in 4:08.95.
“Last year, we had two athletes at state and this year, we had four,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “It’s a great accomplishment
just to get to this meet and it was impressive for us to have three women in the top five.”
