Vaquero women shine at State
Schaeffer leads trio of top-5 finishers
SBCC continued to take big strides forward in women’s Track and Field with three athletes in the top five at the State Championships
and a 17th-place finish in the state during the 2011 campaign.
Sophomore Erika Schaeffer captured a Southern Cal title and grabbed second in the State Steeplechase at American River College
in Sacramento. Her time of 11:15.53 was the second-fastest in school history.
Three Vaquero women placed in the top five in the state, leading SBCC to a 17th-place showing.
Elisabeth Bransgard, a freshman from Sweden, was fifth in the discus with a throw of 41.06 meters (134 feet, 8 inches) on
the last of her six attempts. Kelli Johnson, a sophomore from San Marcos High, tied for fifth in the high jump at 5-1¼.
“Last year, we had two athletes at state and this year, we had four,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “It’s a great accomplishment
just to get to this meet and it was impressive for us to have three women in the top five.”
On March 18, Bransgard won three events (hammer, discus, javelin) to lead the Vaqueros to first place in WSC Meet No. 1.
Her heave of 140 feet, 2¼ inches in the discus was the No. 2 all-time mark in school history. Johnson won the high jump with
a school-record leap of 5-6½.
SBCC took third in the WSC women’s standings (based on the regular season and WSC championships) while the men were 10th.
Seven Vaqueros (men and women) made it to the Southern Cal Championships, up from four the previous year. Cal Keating (long
jump) and Matt Bailey (1,500) both qualified for the So Cal Meet and Bailey advanced to the state finals.
