PROGRAM DIRECTORS

Chris and Laurel have over 25 years of experience teaching between them at Santa Barbara City College and UCSB. Professor Chris Johnston's expertise lies in the teaching of English, specifically in writing across multiple genres. Laurel Johnston has taught multiple subjects within the field of Psychology including: General Psychology, Child Development, Human Development, and Social Psychology. The couple have traveled across Europe, the UK and Ireland as well as throughout the West Indies and Mexico. Additionally,Chris and Laurel have extensively traveled the Santa Barbara Channel Islands with their children on their 27-foot sailboat.

The Johnstons are keenly aware of the power that exposure to new environments, and the challenges and rewards of immersion in different cultures through travel has on the cultivation of deeper critical thinking experiences, and broadening of worldviews. They consider it an honor to travel to Rome with the treasured Study Abroad program at SBCC and are eagerly preparing for Spring 2018 in Rome.
