Rome SP17 Students

Creative Writing, Literature, Psychology, and Italian Language

February 4 - May 5, 2018

Rome, the eternal city, provides an unparalleled vista from which to explore contemporary literature, guided instruction in creative non-fiction writing, and the examination of human behavior. Studying English and Social Psychology in Rome will stimulate our intellects, as our imaginations come alive and truly soar. During the semester we will take multi-day side trips to Florence and The Amalfi Coast, from where students are welcome to catch a short ferry ride to visit the island of Capri.
As the saying goes, when in Rome, we will do as the Romans do. In Social Psychology we will use the setting of Rome and the work of Italian Novelist Elena Ferrante to explore and make sense of human behavior by examining some of Italy's richest, and most enduring cultural traditions. Students will explore these customs on the cobblestone streets of Rome against a backdrop of more than two thousand years of art and architecture. Through creative non-fiction writing, we will write about the real-life people and places encountered, with the goal of producing publishable work, while the study of contemporary literature will expose modern concerns about the human condition rooted in the histories and places in which we're living and visiting.  The program is academic in nature, but it also provides you with the opportunity to forge new friendships, and experience the tremendous personal growth that comes with travel, and to become acquainted with the vibrant culture and history of Italy.
