Vaqueros fall short in Regional
Santa Ana ends stellar season, 7-2
Santa Barbara City College struck first for the second straight day on Sunday but
Santa Ana had too much firepower and came back to beat the visiting Vaqueros 7-2 in
the Southern Cal Regional softball playoffs.
Santa Ana, the No. 7 seed, won the best-of-3 series 2-0 and moves into the Super
Regional next weekend. SBCC finishes the best season in school history with a 31-7
record.
Santa Barbara, which won its first WSC Gold Division title with a 16-2 mark, dropped
two straight games for the first time this year. The Dons rallied to win Saturday’s
playoff opener 3-2.
“We just couldn’t put anything together this weekend,” said coach Paula Congleton.
“It was still a wonderful season with wonderful kids.”
SBCC was designated as the home team for Game 2 of the series.
The Vaqueros went ahead 1-0 in the second on an RBI triple by Lisa Zeitlin that scored
Laura Cannon. The Dons (28-14) responded with two in the third and took a 4-1 lead
on solo homers by Dayna Douglas in the fourth and sixth frames.
Santa Barbara cut the deficit to 4-2 in the sixth when Laura Cannon reached on a
bunt single and scored on double by Carly Smith. Laura Cannon was 2-2 with two runs
and Nicole Adair went 2-4.
Santa Ana added three unearned runs in the seventh with the help of three errors.
Sophomore pitcher Kailey Snyder (27-6) gave up four earned runs on 10 hits. Snyder,
who ranked No. 2 in the state with 233 strikeouts, didn’t strike out a batter and
had only one in two games.

Santa Ana edges Vaqueros 3-2 in Regional
SBCC drops opener of best-of-3 series
SBCC scored twice in the first inning of Saturday’s Southern Cal Regional softball
opener but host Santa Ana rallied for a 3-2 victory and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3
series.
The No. 7-seeded Dons improved to 27-14. The 10th-seeded Vaqueros, champions of the
WSC Gold Division, had their six-game win streak snapped and fell to 31-6.
Kailey Snyder (27-5), the Southern Cal Pitcher of the Year, only gave up four hits
while striking out one. Laura Cannon went 2-3 and drove in both Vaquero runs with
a one-out double in the first inning.
Santa Ana, the fifth-place team from the Orange Empire League, scored two in the
third and got the go-ahead run in the fifth. Rachel Prentice reached on a two-out
error, went to second on a walk, stole third and scored on a wild throw during the
steal.
Dons’ starter Shelly Tait moved to first base after walking leadoff hitter Joan Cannon
in the first. Tait was called for five illegal pitches, resulting in automatic “ball”
calls. Monica Sepulveda (7-1) tossed a five-hitter for the victory.
The Vaqueros stranded seven runners and had the bases loaded in the second and fifth
but couldn’t score.
“Kailey was a little nervous and I think that had a ripple effect on our team,” said
coach Paula Congleton.
Game 2 is Sunday at noon and if the Vaqueros win, a third game will be held 30 minutes
later.

Laura Cannon delivers walk-off homer
Vaqueros score 5 in seventh; Snyder fans 14
SBCC saved the best for last on Tuesday in the final regular-season softball game.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh at Pershing Park, the Vaqueros got a two-run
double from Nicole Adair and a three-run, walk-off homer by Laura Cannon to stun Hancock
7-6.
“I was glad my teammates were on base and I just wanted to get a base hit,” said
Cannon, a sophomore shortstop who went 2-4 with four RBIs. “It was a high pitch and
I got under it.”
Cannon, who’s batting .455, delivered her second walk-off winner of the year. She
leads the team in homers (4) and RBIs (32).
Santa Barbara, ranked No. 7 in Southern Cal and 13th in the state, won for the sixth
straight time to improve to 31-5 overall and 16-2 in the WSC Gold Division. The Vaqueros
secured their first conference title last Thursday.
Kailey Snyder (27-4) overcame a rocky start to earn the victory. She struck out 14,
the second-highest total in school history. She set the school record earlier this
year by fanning 15 Moorpark batters.
Snyder is No. 2 in the state in strikeouts with 233 in 199 innings.
Hancock (8-28, 3-15) took a 4-0 lead after 2½ innings. Starting pitcher Britany Matlock
hit a solo homer in the third off Snyder and Caitlin Voss belted her sixth, a two-run,
two-out shot in the seventh that put the visitors ahead 6-2.
Snyder had only allowed three homers all year coming into Tuesday’s game. The round-tripper
by Voss was extra painful since she used to be Snyder’s catcher at St. Joseph High.
“We had a lot of errors in the first few innings and it almost felt like we weren’t
the same team,” said Snyder. “We finally settled in and, after that, their runs came
on big hits. Giving up the homer to Voss was a little salt in the wound. But good
for her, she deserved it.”
SBCC cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third when Laura Cannon drove in her twin sister,
Joan, with an RBI single and Jasmyne Holmes followed with a run-scoring double to
left.
In the seventh, Elicity Fabing and Mariah Coyazo reached on walks. Joan Cannon singled
to right but Coyazo overran second base and was tagged out at third.
Adair cut the deficit to 6-4 with a two-run double to right-center. Snyder walked
on a 3-2 pitch, setting the stage for Laura Cannon‘s game-winning homer that sailed
over the left-field fence and set off a wild celebration at home plate.
“I have 100 percent faith in Laura,” said Snyder. “I knew she was going to do something.
I wasn’t quite expecting a home run. That was kind of a fairy tale ending.”
The Vaqueros improved to 15-2 at home.
“I felt really confident with Laura at the plate,” said coach Paula Congleton. “I
was telling the kids, let’s go 60 feet at a time, get one run at a time and let‘s
get to the meat of the order.
“We were flat and unfocused at the start. Give Hancock credit, they came after us.
Finally, we got it together in the seventh and hitting is contagious.”
The Vaqueros will compete in the Southern Cal Regional, a best 2-of-3 series, on
May 7-8. The opponent and site will be announced this weekend.

SBCC clinches first WSC softball title
Snyder throws perfect game; Smith hits 2-run homer
Kailey Snyder tossed a perfect game on Thursday at Pershing Park and Carly Smith hit
a home run in the second game as SBCC swept L.A. Pierce to secure the first WSC Gold
Division title in its 14-year softball history.
The scores were 12-0 and 13-0 and both games were shortened to five innings by the
eight-run rule. The 13 runs were a season high.
“Winning the conference is great,” said Snyder, who struck out six and drove in two
runs in the opener. “It’s great to come from being somewhat the underdogs to coming
out on top. It shows how strong we are as a team and how well we work together.”
SBCC (30-5, 15-2) won for the fifth straight time and seventh in eight games to improve
to 14-2 at home. L.A. Pierce completed its season with records of 5-31 and 0-18.
Nicole Adair went 3-for-3 in the first game with two doubles and three runs. Laura
Cannon and Jasmyne Holmes added two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Adair pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts. Stephanie Bolanos
had two hits and drove in three runs, giving her nine RBIs in her last three games.
Smith drilled her third homer -- a two-run blast that caromed off the scoreboard in
center -- during a five-run second inning that gave the home team a 9-0 lead.
Snyder (26-4) notched her 14th shutout in the opener and moved into second on the
state strikeout list with 219. She entered the game with a 0.89 ERA and was coming
off a no-hitter last Sunday in an 8-0 win over Golden West. The only blemish in that
game was a fourth-inning walk.
She didn’t know she had her first perfect game (no runs, no hits, no base runners)
of the year until after Thursday’s doubleheader.
“I was aware that I was doing well and I didn’t think anyone had reached base but
I wasn’t sure and I wasn’t going to ask,” said Snyder, a sophomore from St. Joseph
High in Santa Maria who was named the State Female Player of the Month for March.
“The great thing about Kailey’s perfect game is she threw just 46 pitches,” said
coach Paula Congleton. “It’s exciting to win the conference title. I’m so proud of
the kids.”
The Vaqueros sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning of the first game
and scored seven runs on five hits. Three runs scored on wild pitches and Holmes sprinted
home from second base on the first one.
All but one player had at least one hit in the second game with leadoff hitter Joan
Cannon going 3-4 with three runs. Her twin sister, Laura, was 2-3 with two runs and
two RBIs.
SBCC completes the regular season on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. home game against Hancock.

Snyder tosses no-hitter in Bash at the Beach
Bolanos drives in five runs; SBCC sets all-time win record
Kailey Snyder threw a no-hitter and Stephanie Bolanos knocked in five runs on Sunday,
leading SBCC to an 8-0 softball win over Rio Hondo in the final game of the Vaqueros‘
Bash at the Beach.
Snyder tossed a three-hitter in the opener as No. 15 Santa Barbara (28-5) downed
East L.A. 3-1 to break the school record for victories. The old mark of 26 wins was
set by the 2006 team in 43 games -- 10 more than this year‘s squad has played.
Bolanos went 3-4 in the Rio Hondo game and hit her first homer -- a two-run shot
that made it 2-0 in the second. The Vaqueros scored three times in the sixth inning
on Laura Cannon’s RBI single and a two-run, two-out opposite-field single by Bolanos
that ended the game. That triggered the eight-rule, which gives a team the victory
when it leads by eight or more through five or more innings.
“I brought a lot of confidence to the plate (on the homer),” said Bolanos, a freshman
catcher from Fontana. “I zoned out everybody in the audience and found my pitch. I’m extending my arms and seeing the ball well.”
Snyder struck out six in the first game and 11 in the afternoon affair. She nearly
had a perfect game with the only blemish coming when she walked Ashley Olivas with
two outs in the fourth.
After the no-hitter, Snyder was surprised to hear the news.
“Oh, I didn’t even realize it,” said the sophomore right-hander who’s now 25-4. “I
felt so much better in the second game. I’m starting to get my groove back and my
mental state is there now. I felt really comfortable.”
Snyder didn’t allow an earned run in 13 innings and only surrendered three hits with
17 strikeouts.
“Kailey pitched awesome again,” Bolanos declared. “She’s like Wonder Woman. I don‘t
know how she pitches all these games.”
In other games, Rio Hondo (11-23) downed Golden West 10-4 and East L.A. (14-16-1)
edged Golden West 5-4. SBCC went 3-1 in the two-day tourney.
Joan Cannon and her twin sister, Laura, each had two hits in the 3-1 win over East
L.A. Laura Cannon drove in Snyder with the game-winning run on an RBI single in the
first.
In the opener, Elicity Fabing made two outstanding catches in the top of the seventh.
The left fielder dashed in and reached across her body for a backhand grab of a short
fly ball for the first out. With two outs and a runner on first, she leaped near the
fence and stole a potential game-tying homer from Elizabeth Lopez.
“That girl kept hitting it over there (Lopez hit several foul balls near the left-field
line),” said Fabing, who played two years on the Vaquero women’s soccer team. “I was
waiting for it to come my way and it finally did. I got back there, jumped up, caught
it and landed on the fence.”
The Vaqueros continue their seven-game homestand on Thursday when they return to
WSC Gold Division play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against L.A. Pierce.
SBCC is first in the conference with a 13-2 record. The Vaqueros lead Ventura (11-4)
by two games with three to play and their magic number to clinch at least a tie for
their first title is one.

Vaqueros split in Bash at the Beach
SBCC ties all-time win record with 26
SBCC committed four errors in an 8-4 softball loss to Saddleback on Saturday in the
Bash at the Beach, then rallied for a 5-3 win over Golden West at Pershing Park.
Both opponents compete in the Orange Empire League, the toughest conference in Southern
California. SBCC (26-5) is ranked No. 8 in Southern Cal and 15th in the state while
Saddleback (17-11) is No. 7 in Southern Cal and 14th in the state.
Kailey Snyder pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts in the second game as the
Vaqueros (26-5) tied the school record for wins in a season. The 2006 squad went 26-17.
In other games, Golden West edged L.A. Pierce 2-1, Saddleback routed Rio Hondo 10-1
in six innings and Rio Hondo beat Pierce 7-3.
Laura Cannon and Jasmyne Holmes were both 3-4 in the first game. The Vaqueros jumped
ahead 3-1 in the first inning on an RBI double by Laura Cannon and run-scoring singles
from Holmes and Carly Smith.
After Saddleback went ahead 4-3 in the fifth, SBCC tied it in the bottom half when
Laura Cannon singled, stole second and scored on Holmes’ single up the middle.
The Gauchos scored four unearned runs in the sixth with two outs. With two runners
on, Holmes fielded a grounder at third and threw high to first, allowing the go-ahead
run to score. Rachel Watson hit a fly to left field but Smith dropped it, bringing
in two more runs.
Saddleback posted the highest run total against Snyder (23-4) this year and also
had 10 hits. Christina Bolin led the Gauchos with a homer, a double and three runs.
“I didn’t have my best stuff,” said Snyder, who entered the day with a 0.77 ERA.
“Granted, they’re a great hitting team but I’m still bouncing back from my (rib) injury
and it’s more of a mental thing. I worry that I’ll re-injure myself but I just have
to trust that I’ll be OK and throw as hard as I was in the middle of the season.”
Snyder threw 150 pitches in the opener, including 53 that Saddleback fouled off.
The Gauchos collected six doubles and a homer.
Joan Cannon robbed Ashley Welsh of a homer leading off the fourth with a running
catch that ended with Cannon on the temporary fence.
The Vaqueros trailed 3-1 after 4½ innings of the second game, then scored two in
the fifth and two in the sixth. Mariah Coyazo scored the tying run on an outfield
error. Lisa Zeitlin doubled with one out in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run
on a single by Stephanie Bolanos. After Elicity Fabing rapped her second hit, Bolanos
scored on an RBI single by Joan Cannon.
“Defensively, we didn’t look that sharp today,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We gave
up four runs on two errors in the first game and didn’t respond with our offense.
We came back to win the second game but we left 13 runners on base. That’s a lot of
potential runs.
“Kailey asked to throw the second game because she wanted to work through some things.
It was beneficial because her speed was up and her ball was moving a little more.”
On Sunday, the Vaqueros will take on East L.A. at 10 a.m. and Rio Hondo at noon on
the final day of the Bash at the Beach.

Laura Cannon homers twice in sweep
Vaqueros blank Moorpark 8-0 and 10-0
Sophomore shortstop Laura Cannon went 4-4 with two homers and four RBIs in the first
game on Thursday and SBCC went on to sweep Moorpark 8-0 and 10-0 in a WSC Gold Division
softball doubleheader. The second game was halted after five innings by the eight-run
rule.
The 15th-ranked Vaqueros (25-4, 13-2) have a two-game lead over Ventura (11-4) atop
the conference standings with three to play. SBCC is seeking its first WSC crown.
Kailey Snyder (22-3) got both pitching wins in the road sweep over the Raiders (14-15,
8-8). In the opener, she tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for her 11th
shutout. She went two innings in the nightcap with Nicole Adair pitching the last
three innings. They combined on a 1-hit shutout with the only hit coming in the third
inning.
Laura Cannon belted a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener and a solo
shot leading off the seventh. She was 4-4 with four RBIs, four runs and three stolen
bases. Joan Cannon, her twin sister, was 2-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Adair went 3-3 with two runs scored and five stolen bases. Lisa
Zeitlin was 2-4 and knocked in three runs. The Vaqueros scored five times in the first
inning, with the help of five walks, and five more in the fourth.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 8 in Southern Cal, will host the Bash at the Beach this
weekend. On Saturday, they’ll take on Saddleback (12:30 p.m.) and Golden West (2:30

Oxnard stuns No. 15 Vaqueros 2-1
SBCC commits four errors in first WSC road loss
Four days after shutting out Mt. SAC, the state’s fourth-ranked softball team, SBCC
lost to Oxnard 2-1 on Tuesday.
Laura Cannon went 2-3 in the road setback to the Condors (14-14, 6-6), the fifth-place
team in the WSC Gold Division. The first-place Vaqueros (23-4, 11-2) got just four
hits and committed four errors leading to a pair of unearned runs. It was their first
conference loss in seven road games.
On Monday, they broke into the state rankings for the first time this year at No.
15. They’re also ranked No. 8 in Southern Cal but didn’t look like it on Tuesday.
“This was the ugliest game we’ve ever played,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We didn‘t
hit, we didn‘t field and we didn‘t compete.”
Kailey Snyder (20-3) pitched a six-hitter with three strikeouts for the Vaqueros.
Michelle Getman held SBCC to four hits and just two in the last six innings.
Nicole Adair had a hit and scored Santa Barbara’s only run on a passed ball in the
first.

Snyder tosses 2-hitter; Laura Cannon wins it in 7th
Kailey Snyder pitched a two-hitter on Friday afternoon and Laura Cannon delivered
a dramatic walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh to propel SBCC to a 1-0 softball
upset of No. 4 Mt. San Antonio.
“I’m ecstatic,” said coach Paula Congleton. “This is a huge win for us. Kailey said
she felt 100 percent better than she did on Thursday (when she missed a doubleheader
split with Ventura due to a rib injury).
“She kept them off-balance and all her pitches were working.”
Snyder (20-2) struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in the nonconference game
at Pershing Park. She’s allowed two hits or less in 11 games this season. She retired
the last 10 in order in a classic pitching duel with Alexa Limon. The Mounties’ right-hander
held SBCC to six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Santa Barbara improved to 23-3 while Mt. SAC, ranked No. 2 in Southern Cal and No.
4 in the state, fell to 24-3. The Mounties won state championships in 2005, ‘07 and
‘09 and were second last year.
SBCC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Stephanie Bolanos
and Mariah Coyazo and a fielder’s choice on a bunt by Joan Cannon. Limon got two outs
on a groundout and strikeout before Laura Cannon stepped to the plate.
The cleanup hitter belted the first pitch to left-center and the center fielder couldn’t
reach it as the ball one-hopped the fence. Pinch-runner Elicity Fabing sprinted home
with the winning run.
“It was a high and inside pitch and I was just trying to hit it hard,” said Laura
Cannon, who made several strong plays at shortstop. “This feels really good.”
Coyazo, a freshman second baseman, went 2-3 and had a nice running catch in foul
territory behind first base for the second out in the seventh.
Snyder said her rib hurt “a little bit but I just decided to work through it.”
It was the 10th shutout of the year for the sophomore from St. Joseph High in Santa
Maria. She only allowed three base runners in seven innings and no one reached third.
Snyder nearly homered to right-center leading off the sixth but Lauren Moreno snagged
the ball as she was falling into the temporary fence.
“Beating the fourth-ranked team in the state means a lot as far as our emotional
well-being and motivation,” said Congleton. “It also gives us validation that we are
one of the top 10 teams in the state.”
SBCC beat top-ranked Siskiyous 3-1 on March 5 at the Fresno Tournament.

Snyder sidelined; Smith homers in opener
With star pitcher Kailey Snyder sidelined by a rib injury, SBCC's Nicole Adair knew
she'd have to pitch in Thursday's WSC softball doubleheader at Pershing Park. But
she didn't know how much.
"I knew I’d have to throw a couple of innings,” said Adair, a sophomore who normally
plays right field. “Then coach looked at me when I was warming up and said, ‘Make
sure you’re good.’ That’s when reality hit me and I knew my team needed 14 innings.
“I gave them the best I could and my arm held up really well.”
Adair (3-1) tossed a seven-hitter in the opener and beat Ventura 4-1. The Pirates
(15-13, 8-4) used a 10-hit attack to win the second game by the same 4-1 score.
The first-place Vaqueros (22-3, 11-1) suffered their first WSC Gold Division loss
in the nightcap and had their nine-game winning streak snapped. Jasmyne Holmes had
a double in each game.
“When Kailey was throwing up at Cuesta (on Tuesday), she felt a little off-balance,”
said coach Paula Congleton. “One of her ribs was out of place. She went to the chiropractor
a couple of times and it’s really inflamed. When she follows through, she’s in excruciating
pain.
“Nicole did an outstanding job. It’s really unfortunate that we didn’t support her
on offense.”
Snyder looped a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning of the second game. The Vaqueros
loaded the bases with two outs but couldn’t score.
Carly Smith hit a solo homer in the first inning of the opener and drove in two runs.
The Vaqueros took a 3-1 lead in the second frame on two walks, a single by Stephanie
Bolanos and an error on a grounder by Joan Cannon that brought in two runs.
Joan Cannon manufactured SBCC’s last run in the fifth. She reached on a bunt single
and sprinted from first to third on Adair’s bunt single past the pitcher. Smith grounded
out to third and Cannon took off for home on the throw to first, knocking the ball
out of the catcher’s mitt with a hard slide.
Cannon ended the Ventura sixth with a diving grab of a ball hit to left-center field
by Janessa Pulido.
“I love having Joan In the 1 (hitting) spot because we can always make things happen
when she’s on-base,” Congleton noted. “We called the bunt-and-run and she got from
first to third with a great outside slide.
“She’s quick, she’s smart and defensively, there’s no better center fielder in our
conference.“
In the nightcap, Pulido held SBCC to six hits and struck out five.
“Give Ventura credit, they made some plays today,” said Congleton. “We knew they’d
eventually catch up to what Nicole was doing. We needed to produce some offense. We
have to figure that out in the next 24 hours.”
The Vaqueros will host the state’s fourth-ranked team, Mt. San Antonio (23-2), on
Friday at 3 p.m.

Snyder just misses no-hitter
She holds Cuesta to 4 hits in sweep
SBCC’s Kailey Snyder took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon, then
settled for a one-hit shutout in the opener of a WSC doubleheader at Cuesta.
The Vaqueros won 1-0 and 5-1 in San Luis Obispo to improve to 21-2 overall and 10-0
in the WSC Gold Division. They’ve won eight straight games and 20 of their last 21.
SBCC is No. 8 in the RPI ratings for Southern Cal but isn’t ranked in the State or
South Region polls.
Snyder threw a three-hitter in the second game and the visitors got two hits and
two RBIs from Lisa Zeitlin. The Vaqueros had 10 hits in the nightcap with Snyder,
Zeitlin, Joan Cannon and Nicole Adair all collecting two apiece.
Snyder (19-2) struck out six in each game and had one walk in the nightcap. In the
opener, she notched her fifth one-hitter and ninth shutout. Liz Isaak broke up the
no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh. The run she allowed in the second
game was unearned.
In the first game, she retired the first 12 batters in order. Snyder was helped out
by her catcher Stephanie Bolanos, who threw out a runner trying to steal in the fifth
and first baseman Jasmyne Holmes, who started a double play with two runners on in
the seventh.
Karen Berna pitched a four-hitter for Cuesta (9-17, 4-6) in the opener with four
strikeouts. Santa Barbara scored the game’s only run in the third when Carly Smith
singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout. Joan Cannon
drove in Smith with an RBI single through the left side.
“The first game was a real battle,” said coach Paula Congleton. “In the second game,
we were focused at the plate and very patient.”
The Vaqueros will host Ventura in a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m.

Vaqueros rally to complete sweep
Zeitlin, Holmes combine for seven RBIs
Six was the magic number for the SBCC softball team on an overcast Saturday at Pershing
Park. The Vaqueros routed El Camino 9-1 in six innings and then used a three-run sixth
to rally past Pasadena 3-2.
SBCC (19-2) won for the sixth straight time and improved to 18-1 in its last 19 games.
The Vaqueros are a perfect 7-0 at home.
Lisa Zeitlin went 3-3 with three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases in the opener
while Jazmyne Holmes was 2-3 with two doubles and an RBI. They combined for seven
RBIs in the twinbill.
Kailey Snyder (17-2) pitched a five-hitter in the second game with 11 strikeouts
and no walks. She relieved Nicole Adair in the fourth inning of the opener with a
3-1 lead and retired the last nine Warriors in order for her first save. After El
Camino’s Kendall Roles led off the game with a single, Adair and Snyder tossed no-hit
ball the rest of the way.
Pasadena scored an unearned run in the first and led 1-0 through five innings. The
Vaqueros managed just two hits off Adrianna Stevens in the first five frames.
Megan Martin took the mound in the bottom of the sixth and lasted just three batters.
After walks to Joan Cannon and Adair, Stevens returned to the mound. She got the second
out and then walked Laura Cannon intentionally to load the bases.
Holmes lined a two-run single over the shortstop to put the Vaqueros on top 2-1.
Zeitlin followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1.
“They walked the batter in front of me twice today, although the first wasn’t intentional,”
said Holmes, a sophomore first baseman from Dos Pueblos High. “I was ticked when they
walked me. The best way to get them back was to drive in two runs.”
Pasadena (6-24) got a single and double to open the seventh and cut the deficit to
3-2 on an infield hit by Jessica Chavez. Denise Villalobos popped up a bunt and Holmes
made a diving catch, then fired to third for a double play. Zeitlin got the final
out on a grounder to third.
“I wasn’t expecting her to bunt but when she did, I crashed hard and thank goodness
Lisa went back to third (to take the throw),” said Holmes.
In the opener, Santa Barbara scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to
finish off El Camino. Zeitlin had a run-scoring double in the fifth and a two-run
single in the sixth that boosted the lead to eight runs, ending the nonconference
game on the mercy rule.
Sara Gazzaniga, who played for SBCC last year, was the starting pitcher for El Camino.
She gave up seven runs while pitching the first two innings and the last two.
SBCC has outscored its opponents 49-10 during the six-game win streak.
“We’ve been hitting well but we also struggled the first time we played Pasadena
(in a 9-1 win),” said coach Paula Congleton. “We couldn’t get past that slow pitching.
I was surprised their coach took their starter out (to start the sixth).”
Saturday’s twinbill was the first of three doubleheaders in six days for the Vaqueros,
who travel to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday to take on Cuesta at 1 p.m.

Vaqueros erupt for 24 runs in sweep
Snyder gets two wins, belts homer in opener
Kailey Snyder returned to her hometown in grand style on Thursday with two pitching
victories and a home run in a softball sweep of Hancock in Santa Maria. The scores
were 12-7 and 12-0 with the second game going five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Snyder, a sophomore from St. Joseph High who’s known as ‘The Hurricane,’ pitched
a seven-hitter and a two-hitter. She struck out nine with one walk in the opener and
fanned six with a walk in the nightcap.
She hit her second homer in the opener -- a solo shot in the fifth -- and improved
her pitching record to 16-2. It was the fourth straight win and 16th in 17 games for
the Vaqueros (17-2, 8-0), the only unbeaten team in the WSC Gold Division.
Santa Barbara has scored 34 runs in three games this week.
Laura Cannon was 3-4 with two RBIs in the first game and Lisa Zeitlin and Joan Cannon
each had two hits and an RBI. The Vaqueros built a 12-4 led after 4½ innings but the
Bulldogs (7-16, 2-7) took advantage of two errors to score three times in the fifth
and extend the game.
In the second game, second baseman Mariah Coyazo went 3-3 with two RBIs and three
runs scored. Snyder threw 60 pitches (46 for strikes) and faced 17 batters, just two
over the minimum.
SBCC scored six runs in the second inning, thanks to a two-run double from Snyder
and an RBI double by Jasmyne Holmes.

Vaqueros get six extra-base hits in road win
Sophomore Kailey Snyder tossed a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts on Tuesday as SBCC
routed L.A. Pierce 10-0 in a WSC Gold Division softball game at Woodland Hills.
It was the seventh shutout of the year for Snyder (14-2), who also had a run-scoring
triple in the sixth. She hit one batter and didn’t walk anyone.
Snyder has given up three hits or less in 11 of her 16 games.
Nicole Adair went 3-5 for the first-place Vaqueros (15-2, 6-0) while Stephanie Bolanos
and Laura Cannon were both 2-4 with three RBIs. The Vaqueros had three triples (Adair,
Laura Cannon, Snyder) and six of their 12 hits went for extra bases.
Joan Cannon added a three-run homer in the seventh for SBCC, which has won 14 of
its last 15.
“I challenged our team to score two runs in each inning and have no errors on defense,”
said coach Paula Congleton. “We didn’t quite do that but we did finish with no errors.
“We wanted Kailey to throw 70 pitches or less and she threw exactly 70. The amazing
thing is that 62 were strikes.”
The Vaqueros will travel to Hancock for a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 1
p.m. They’ll play a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday at home, taking on El Camino
at 11 a.m. and Pasadena at 1 p.m.

Snyder breaks school record with 15 K
Sophomore throws 3-hitter in 3-0 home win
Kailey Snyder turned in a masterful performance on Tuesday afternoon, holding Moorpark
to three singles and striking out a school-record 15 in a 3-0 shutout at Pershing
Park.
“She throws harder than most pitchers and she was hitting her spots,” said Vaquero
catcher Stephanie Bolanos while rubbing her left palm. “Look at my hand. My finger
is swollen because she throws so hard.”
The Vaqueros (14-2, 5-0) are No. 7 in the state RPI ratings and No. 4 in Southern
California. They’re the only unbeaten team in the WSC Gold Division after handing
Moorpark (8-8, 3-1) its first loss.
Snyder, a sophomore from St. Joseph High, only gave up an infield single and a walk
in the first five innings. Her previous high for strikeouts was 11, set last Saturday
in a 6-0 loss to No. 8 Riverside.
The Vaqueros scored twice in the fourth on singles by Lisa Zeitlin and Bolanos, followed
by an RBI single from pinch-hitter Mariah Coyazo and a run-scoring groundout by Nicole
Adair.
Snyder (13-2) fanned six in a row in the middle innings and struck out 12 of the
last 16 batters. She had four 1-2-3 innings and struck out the side in the fourth
and seventh. SBCC’s previous strikeout record was 12 by Maria Coder, set in 2005.
“I felt really good today,” said Snyder after notching her sixth shutout. “I kept
thinking about Riverside. I had so much intensity and concentration in that game.
If there was ever a moment I thought I might give up a little bit, I just brought
myself back to the Riverside game.
“My pitch location was a big thing today and I tried to keep them off-balance.”
Snyder has allowed three hits or less in 10 of her 15 games.
Bolanos had two hits and scored twice for the Vaqueros, who had eight hits but stranded
nine runners. SBCC scored its last run in the sixth when Bolanos singled and scored
on a groundout by Carly Smith.
“Everything was working for Kailey, her drop had a good six inches on it,” said coach
Paula Congleton. “It looked like she had a little more heat on the ball and they just
weren’t getting around on it.”

No. 8 Riverside ends 12-game win streak
SBCC routed Pasadena 9-1 and was blanked by No. 8 Riverside 6-0 on Saturday night
at the Bakersfield Softball Tournament.
Nicole Adair got the pitching win over Pasadena in her first outing of the year.
She held the Lancers to four hits and struck out seven. Catcher Stephanie Bolanos
went 2-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Adair had a two-run
double during a six-run uprising in the sixth and Lisa Zeitlin added a run-scoring
double.
The Vaqueros (13-2) had their school-record 12-game win streak snapped in the second
game. Kailey Snyder tossed an eight-hitter with 11 strikeouts but Riverside pitcher
Nicole Zink was better, allowing just four hits and fanning 12. It was the first time
SBCC has been shut out this year.
The Tigers (21-4) are ranked No. 8 in the state.
"Riverside is very disciplined and very aggressive," said coach Paula Congleton.
"We never adjusted to their pitcher. She is, by far, the best we've seen this year."
The Vaqueros final game of the tourney, slated for Sunday against Bakersfield, was

Snyder, Zeitlin shine in sweep
Vaqueros set school record with 11th straight win
Kailey Snyder went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in SBCC’s 4-0 softball shutout of Oxnard
on Thursday and Lisa Zeitlin was 3-3 with a single, double and triple in the second
game, leading the Vaqueros to a 10-2 victory and a WSC Gold Division sweep at Pershing
Park.
Zeitlin drove in three runs in the second game, which was shortened to five innings
by the eight-run rule.
Snyder tossed a three-hitter and a two-hitter as the Vaqueros extended their best
start in school history to 12-1. They’re a perfect 4-0 in conference and have won
a school-record 11 straight games.
The Vaqueros improved to 4-0 at home by piling up 14 runs on 15 hits, including four
doubles, a triple and two homers. Snyder, who’s batting .514, belted her first homer
in the opener -- a two-run shot in the sixth that followed a single by Carly Smith.
Snyder also had an RBI double during a two-run first inning.
Smith was 2-3 with an RBI double in the opener.
Snyder (12-1) threw just 77 pitches in the first game with seven strikeouts and no
walks en route to her fifth shutout. She gave up two straight hits to open the fourth
but was helped out by the twins -- Joan and Laura Cannon. Joan fielded the leadoff
hit in center field and fired a strike to her sister Laura at shortstop, who tagged
out the runner at second base.
Snyder allowed a two-run homer to Janai Shaw in the first inning of the nightcap,
then retired the next 10 in order. She struck out four and didn’t walk a batter while
lowering her ERA to 0.60.
In the second game, Stephanie Bolanos evened the score at 2-2 with a second-inning
single that scored Jasmyne Holmes and Zeitlin, who had doubled.
Laura Cannon hit her first homer, a two-run blast to center, in the third after Snyder
was intentionally walked to lead off the inning. Zeitlin added an RBI triple and scored
on an infield error to make it 6-2.
“I’m just trying to stay as consistent as I can,” said Zeitlin, a sophomore third
baseman from Calabasas. “I felt like I was focusing a little more in the second game.
I felt really comfortable
“This is such a special team. It’s really a pleasure to have Kailey pitching so well,
our defense playing so well and we’re practicing hard every day in our nice new (batting)

Nicole Adair delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh on Tuesday to
lift SBCC to a 3-2 comeback victory at Ventura. It was the ninth straight win for
the Vaqueros (10-1, 2-0 WSC Gold Division), who tied the 2005 squad for the best start
in school history.
Freshman catcher Stephanie Bolanos went 3-3 with two doubles and two runs. Trailing
2-1, Lisa Zeitlin opened the seventh with a single and scored the tying run on Bolanos’
double to right field. With two outs, Adair brought Bolanos home with the game-winner
on a single up the middle.
Sophomore pitcher Kailey Snyder improved to 10-1 with a six-hitter. She struck out
eight and walked three. Facing the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 batters in the bottom of the seventh,
Snyder recorded a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
The Vaqueros pulled within 2-1 in the fifth on a double by Bolanos and an RBI single
from Joan Cannon.
Joan Cannon and Adair were both 2-4 with an RBI.

Snyder does it all in WSC opener
She pitches 4-hitter, belts go-ahead RBI triple
Pitching for the fifth time in four days didn’t seem to bother Kailey Snyder on Tuesday
as SBCC opened WSC Gold Division play with a 4-1 victory over Cuesta at Pershing Park.
“Surprisingly, I’m not tired,” said Snyder, after tossing a four-hitter with nine
strikeouts. “I was more sore Sunday morning before our first two games (on the second
day of the Fresno Tournament). On Monday, I was completely fine and ready to play
again.”
It was the eighth straight win for the Vaqueros (9-1, 1-0), who were making just
their second home appearance. SBCC has outscored its opponents 45-7 during the win
streak.
Cuesta (5-11, 0-1) got runners on first and second with no outs in the second but
Snyder held them to one run on Devin Oddenino’s one-hopper to right that Nicole Adair
turned into the second out at first base. Snyder got the other two outs when batters
looked at strike three.
“In situations like that, I just picture it like there’s nobody on base, it’s a brand-new
game and block out everything else,” said Snyder.
Carly Smith singled in the second and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. In
the fourth, Laura Cannon reached on an error and scored the go-ahead run on Snyder’s
triple over the right-fielder’s head.
“Kailey might have been a little nervous since this was our conference opener but
she really settled down after giving up that run,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Overall,
we struggled a little at the plate but still won 4-1 against one of the better pitchers
we‘ve seen. I’ll take that any day.”
Elizabeth Isaak tossed a five-hitter for the Cougars and struck out nine, including
six of the first eight batters.
The Vaqueros sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth and loaded the bases on
a single by Lisa Zeitlin and two walks. Nicole Adair forced in a run with a walk and
Maryann Giles scored the fourth run on an error.

Vaqueros take Fresno title with 4-0 record
They win two, extending streak to seven
SBCC won two games on Sunday to capture the Bash in Fresno Tournament with a perfect
4-0 record. The Vaqueros beat Fresno City 5-2 and Porterville 8-0, both in five innings.
The first game was shortened by the time limit and the second by the 8-run rule.
Kailey Snyder tossed a two-hitter and one-hitter to improve her record to 8-1. The
Vaqueros (8-1) have won seven straight games.
Snyder won all four games in the two-day, 12-team tourney and allowed just seven
hits with 27 strikeouts in 24 innings. The Vaqueros beat the state’s No. 1-ranked
team, Siskiyous, 3-1 on Saturday behind a three-hitter from Snyder.
The first game was played in a steady rain. Snyder struck out four and walked six
(more than she had in seven games combined). She had four walks in the fourth when
coach Paula Congleton said the rain really started coming down, making it tough to
grip the ball.
The Vaqueros scored four in the top of the fourth to boost their lead to 5-0. Laura
Cannon, Snyder and Jazmyne Holmes had RBI singles. Another run scored when Carly Smith
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Against Porterville, SBCC built another 5-0 lead after a four-run third inning, then
ended the game with three in the bottom of the fifth. Laura Cannon was 3-3 with two
singles, two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.
Snyder was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs and catcher Stephanie Bolanos was 2-3 with
a pair of RBIs. Snyder gave up a single to start the game, then retired the next 15
batters. She struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

Kailey Snyder turned in a pair of outstanding pitching performances on Saturday at
the Bash in Fresno Tournament. She tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the
Vaqueros shocked the state’s top-ranked team, College of the Siskiyous, 3-1. She came
back to throw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 5-0 win over Victor Valley.
“It’s been many years since we beat a No. 1-ranked team, if ever,” said Vaquero coach
Paula Congleton, whose team is 6-1. “Kailey kept both teams off-balance all day.”
Snyder (6-1), a sophomore from St. Joseph High, didn’t walk a batter in 14 innings
of work. She has 52 strikeouts in 40 innings.
It was the first loss in nine games for Siskiyous, which entered the game with 10
homers and 25 doubles.
Lisa Zeitlin’s sacrifice fly gave the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead in the second. Faith Eranson’s

Snyder sparkles in home-opening win
Sophomore holds Bakersfield to five hits
When Kailey Snyder woke up Thursday morning, she thought SBCC’s home opener might
be rained out. Once she found out the game was on, the sophomore pitcher didn’t fool
around, throwing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 2-1 win over Bakersfield.
“I didn’t get to prepare mentally like I normally do,“ said Snyder, who got a strikeout,
pop-out and strikeout to end the game after giving up an RBI single in the seventh.
“I was excited to get to play at home.
“We have a long way to go but when we get to that point, we‘re going to be solid.”
The Vaqueros (2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth at newly renovated Pershing Park.
Carly Smith drilled her second single to open the inning and Snyder doubled to right-center
with one out. Third baseman Lisa Zeitlin drove a ball to the fence in left-center,
scoring both runners.
After giving up an infield single to the second batter, Snyder retired 11 straight.
In the fifth, the Renegades (6-3) got runners to second and third but Snyder promptly
got three straight outs. She had four 1-2-3 innings and didn‘t walk a batter.
Snyder, a former St. Joseph High standout, has 25 strikeouts in 19 innings.
“Kailey looked really good today,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Bakersfield’s a great
team and for her to get seven strikeouts is great. We‘re even prouder that she didn‘t
have any walks.”
The Vaqueros' next home game on Saturday at noon against Pasadena has been postponed
by rain.
