2010 Game Stories

By Dave Loveton, sports information

Saturday, Jan. 30 -- Foothill at SBCC (DH), 1 & 3 p.m. SBCC 14-10, Foothill 6-1 (both games 5 inn., 8-run rule)  Record: 2-0

Vaqueros score 24 on opening day
Cannons explode for 10 runs in sweep

Fueled by the offense of the Cannon twins, SBCC opened its softball season with a 24-run eruption on Saturday in a sweep of Foothill at Pershing Park. The scores were 14-6 and 10-1 and both games were halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

SBCC jumped ahead 6-0 after three innings of the opener on two-run singles by Lauren Takayesu and pitcher Kailey Snyder. Foothill responded with six runs of its own in the top of the fourth but the Vaqueros sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring five more runs on four hits.

"We were all excited to start the season," said Laura Cannon, a freshman shortstop from Berkeley. "When they tied it up, we just came right back and got the momentum."

Laura Cannon, who's older than her sister Joan by 40 minutes, went 3-for-4 in the first game with four RBIs and three runs scored. She drove in her sister Joan three times. Joan, the leadoff hitter, collected two hits and a walk while scoring four runs.

SBCC took an 11-6 lead into the top of the fifth in Game 1 and quickly loaded the bases on a walk, a single by Joan Cannon and a good hustle play by Elicity Fabing, who reached base after striking out. Laura Cannon drove in two runs with a single to left and, following a walk, Lindsie Holloway and Kellee Venturi delivered RBI singles to end the game.

Sixteen players got into the first game for SBCC and 15 played in the nightcap.

"I'm really happy with our offense," said coach Paula Congleton. "We used all 17 players and we really didn't drop off. When they came back and tied it at 6 in that first game, even with the second group, we fired right back and scored and shut them down in five innings."

Snyder got the win in the opener, holding the Owls without a run in 4 1/3 innings. She pitched the first three innings and then returned with two outs in the fourth and got the the last four outs. She struck out five and walked three.

The Vaqueros jumped ahead 3-1 in the second game and got a combined two-hitter from Jeana Carrillo and Liliana Caughman. Carrillo, one of four Lompoc High players on the squad, had two strikeouts and three walks over four frames. She also had a two-run double that capped a four-run fourth.

Defensive highlights included right fielder Nicole Adair throwing out a runner at first and second baseman Patricia Martinez starting a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth.

Defense comes up big for Vaqueros
SBCC turns two doubles plays, holds Mission to four hits

Four SBCC pitchers combined on a four-hitter Thursday and the defense was spectacular in a 2-1 nonconference victory over L.A. Mission at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (3-0) scored their runs in the first on RBI singles by Amanda Sharp and Jasmyne Holmes. They had two runners on in the second and fifth and loaded the bases in the sixth but couldn't score. Mission got its run in the second on a walk and two straight singles.
"It was good to play a low-scoring game," said coach Paula Congelton, whose team scored 14 and 10 runs in its first two games. "The kids said they were reading the pitcher but we left a lot of runners on."
Right fielder Nicole Adair had two hits and scored a run for SBCC, which collected nine hits but left 10 runners on base.
The Vaqueros didn't commit an error and turned double plays in the second and third innings, started by shortstop Laura Cannon and relief pitcher Liliana Caughman. In the fourth, Mission's Amanda Hernandez tried to stretch a single into a double but center fielder Joan Cannon threw her out at second.
Kailey Snyder and Sara Gazzaniga combined to retire the last nine batters with Gazzaniga, who pitched the seventh, striking out Hernandez to end the game.

"They got their first run on an RBI single and the second on a bloop single that landed near the right-field line," said coach Paula Congleton. "They didn't hit our pitchers hard but they strung their hits together while we did not."

Sara Gazzaniga held the Renegades to two hits in the first four frames before Snyder, a freshman from St. Joseph High, came on in the fifth.

Amanda Sharp drew a walk to open the eighth frame and Snyder drove a ball over the right fielder's head for a run-scoring triple. Zeitlin added a two-out RBI single.
"It was a fantastic game and they're always nailbiters up here," noted coach Paula Congleton. "We were excited to play under the lights in their new $1.5 million stadium. They're going to host the state finals this year."

  Vaqueros stay perfect at home
Zeitlin, Venturi drive in two runs apiece in 6-4 win

Lisa Zeitlin and Kellee Venturi drove in two runs each on Thursday, leading SBCC to a 6-4 nonconference win over Canyons at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (5-1) collected twice as many hits (12-6) and remained perfect at home with a 4-0 record.
"It was a great game, Canyons has been WSC champs on the Blue side for four or five years," said coach Paula Congleton. "Every time they got close, we would come right back with runs of our own. It's been a joy to coach this year because I've had teams in the past where other teams would score and we wouldn't fire back.
"This team doesn't know how to lose, they just keep fighting back."
SBCC jumped ahead 2-0 in the second on an RBI triple down the right-field line by Zeitlin and an RBI single from Jasmyne Holmes. In the third, Janelle Wong singled with two outs, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Zeitlin's single.
"It was an outside pitch (on the triple), so I just went with it," said Zeitlin, a freshman third baseman from Calabasas High. "I didn't think it would be a triple. I was just trying to make solid contact."
Wong, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Batting in the cleanup spot, she drilled singles in three straight innings (2nd through 4th). Kellee Venturi entered the game in the fourth and went 2-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Run-scoring singles by Venturi and Wong made it 5-2 in the fourth. Joan Cannon (2-4, 2 runs) led off the sixth with an infield hit, went to second on a sacrifice by Nicole Adair and scored on a single by Venturi, boosting the lead to 6-4.
Starter Liliana Caughman (1-0) tossed four innings, allowing a pair of runs on three hits to earn her first collegiate win. Kailey Snyder came on in relief with runners at first and second and no outs in the sixth. After getting the first out, she hit a batter to load the bases, then got out of the jam with two pop-outs to Holmes at second base.

Tuesday, March 2 -- Glendale at SBCC, 2:30 p.m. SBCC 10, Glendale 2 (6 inn., run rule)  Record: 6-1

Zeitlin goes 4-for-4 in 10-2 rout
Carrillo allows one hit over last four innings

Lisa Zeitlin went 4-for-4 with three runs scored Tuesday afternoon and reliever Jeana Carrillo retired the first 10 batters she faced as SBCC routed Glendale 10-2 in a nonconference softball game at Pershing Park. The game was called after six innings due to the eight-run rule.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the hometown Vaqueros (the teams share the same nickname) rallied for their third straight win. Santa Barbara (6-1), which has outscored its opponents 45-17, improved to 5-0 at home.

"There was no panic when we fell behind," said Zeitlin. "We just fight right back. It's becoming a pattern for us."

SBCC sent 10 batters to the plate in the second and scored four runs on seven hits. They added four more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 8-2.

Laura Cannon (2 hits, 2 runs) opened the sixth with a single. Zeitlin got her fourth single on a bunt and Paty Martinez stroked an RBI single to left, scoring Cannon. After Kailey Snyder walked to load the bases, Elicity Fabing hit a chopper to second base but Zeitlin beat the throw home, ending the game.

Second baseman Jasmyne Holmes was 2-3 with a two-run double in the fourth. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, SBCC stormed back with four runs in the second on RBI singles by Laura Cannon, Lauren Takayesu, Joan Cannon and Nicole Adair.
Sara Gazzaniga allowed two runs on three hits in the first inning.
Carrillo came on in the top of the third and retired 10 straight with three strikeouts. Glendale's Brittni Spear singled with one out in the sixth but she was erased on an inning-ending double play. First baseman Kellee Venturi snared a line-drive, then stepped on the bag to end the inning.

"I was throwing the curve a lot, along with the screwball and fastball," said Carrillo, a freshman from Lompoc High. "It's always nice to be on a hitting team. We're all out there doing our job and everyone is contributing."

Every starter had at least one hit as the Vaqueros tied their season hit with 17 hits.

"Our offensive prowess is definitely showing," said coach Paula Congleton. "That's the great thing about this team -- we show so much character. If the other team scores two, we'll come back with three or four.

"Lisa has been on fire (at the plate). Her nickname is 'Clutch' and she certainly was today. She's playing great at third base also."

SBCC was 17-for-35 (.486) on Tuesday, raising the team average over .390.

The Vaqueros open WSC Gold Division play on Thursday with a 2:30 p.m. home game against Ventura.

  Vaqueros fall in WSC opener
Snyder belts 3-run homer in 6-4 loss to Ventura

Kailey Snyder pitched a complete game and hit a three-run homer on Thursday at Pershing Park but it wasn't enough for SBCC in a 6-4 softball loss to Ventura.
Snyder, a freshman from St. Joseph High, retired 13 straight batters from the first inning to the fifth in the WSC Gold Division opener. She gave the Vaqueros (6-2, 0-1) a 4-2 lead with her team's first homer of the year -- a three-run blast to right field in the fourth.
Santa Barbara cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third when Jasmyne Holmes led off with a single and came around to score on an error. Ventura (12-6, 1-0) rallied for two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to hand SBCC its first home loss in six games.
"Kailey threw a phenomenal game and defensively, we didn't make a lot of the basic plays that we do day-in and day-out," said coach Paula Congleton. "That gave them opportunities to score.
"In the sixth inning, Kailey gets to third (on a single and two-base error) with one out and we leave her there. We had a little lack of focus at the plate."
Janelle Wong had a double and two singles while Snyder and Lauren Takayesu each had a pair of hits. Snyder allowed eight hits and struck out five.
"Kailey was throwing heat today, averaging between 59 and 64 mph," noted Congleton. "Unfortunately our offense didn't pick her up. We only had eight hits and left five runners in scoring position. You do that and you're going to lose against a good team."
SBCC plays Pasadena (9 a.m.) and San Bernardino Valley (1:30 p.m.) on Friday at the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach. Pasadena is the only team to shut out the Vaqueros this year, winning 2-0 on Feb. 15.

 Vaqueros split in tourney
Snyder homers for second straight day

Kailey Snyder homered for the second straight day on Friday as SBCC split a pair of softball games on the first day of the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach.
The Vaqueros (7-3) dropped the morning game to Pasadena 4-3, then came back and beat San Bernardino Valley 4-3. Snyder hit a deep two-run homer in the fifth to put SBCC ahead 4-2.
Amanda Sharp went 4-for-4 with a double in the second game. Her two-run single in the third put the Vaqueros up 2-0. Sara Gazzaniga and Jeana Carrillo combined on a five-hitter with Carrillo giving up one run on one hit over the last three innings.
The afternoon game was the third contest in 24 hours for the Vaqueros, who rapped out 12 hits.
"We switched a few people around and scattered the slap hitters around the lineup," said coach Paula Congleton. "We're still struggling with the mental game and we need to work on getting timely hits."
The Vaqueros had just four hits against Pasadena. They took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Joan Cannon and a sacrifice fly by Janelle Wong. Pasadena scored twice in the bottom of the fifth with the game-winner coming home on a double play. Joan Cannon caught a long fly ball in center for the second out and the Lancers' scored the go-ahead run before she threw out a runner at third to end the inning.

SBCC (9-5, 1-2) was held to three hits in the first game while Sara Gazzaniga tossed a four-hitter. Candice Amara's one-out homer in the sixth was the difference.
Jasmyne Holmes went 3-for-3 in the second game while Snyder was 2-4 with an RBI. Snyder allowed six singles with 10 strikouts and no walks. First baseman Kellee Venturi snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Laura Cannon and Janelle Wong drove in Joan Cannon with another single.

SBCC gave No. 2 Mt. San Antonio all it could handle on Wednesday night before dropping a 2-0 nonconference softball decision in Walnut. Liliana Caughman and Kailey Snyder combined on a seven-hitter against the defending state champions.
The Vaqueros (9-7) turned two double plays and didn't commit an error. The Mounties (16-6) scored both their runs in the fifth inning.
"We played really well, the defense was solid on both sides," said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. "We left eight on base, though, and had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh."
Laura Cannon had a first-inning double for the Vaqueros, who return to WSC action on Thursday with a 2:30 p.m. home game against L.A. Pierce.

 Carrillo sparks Vaquero comeback
SBCC erupts for 10 runs in 4th inning of 12-4 victory

SBCC started slow but finished with a flurry on Thursday afternoon in a 12-4 WSC softball victory over L.A. Pierce. The game was called in the sixth inning by the eight-run rule when Lauren Takayesu drove in Paty Martinez with a two-out single.
The Vaqueros (10-7, 2-3) fell behind 4-1 after three frames against the winless Brahmas (0-17, 0-7), then erupted for 10 runs in the fourth to take an 11-4 lead. They sent 14 batters to the plate and pounded out eight hits, starting with singles by Jeana Carrillo and Joan Cannon.
Lisa Zeitlin, who went 3-4, tied it at 4 by driving in two with a bases-loaded single and pinch-hitters Amanda Sharp and Janelle Wong followed with RBI hits to boost the lead to 6-4. Carrillo had two singles and scored twice in the 10-run uprising.
Carrillo (5-2), who made her first start at first base, took over the piching duties with the bases loaded and no outs in the third. She walked in a run to give Pierce a 4-1 lead, then retired nine straight batters. She pitched four innings, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts.
"We were a little scared (after falling behind 4-1)," said Carrillo, a freshman from Lompoc High. "We knew we could come back with the bats. I was a little nervous coming in with the bases loaded but I just threw as hard as I could.
"I knew my defense would hold them back. I felt strong today."
Kailey Snyder went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Vaqueros were playing their second game in less than 22 hours. They dropped a 2-0 decision at defending state champion Mt. San Antonio on Wednesday night.
"I wasn't concerned that we would lose the game but it's frustrating when you come off a good effort against the state champions and you come in and let Pierce score four runs," said coach Paula Congleton. "We made a few changes in the fourth with pinch hitters and we started putting the bat on the ball.
"It was nice to score 12 runs and see a few kids with multiple hits."
The Brahmas hadn't scored more than two runs in their first 16 games. The 12 runs were the second-highest total of the year for the Vaqueros.
SBCC will take on Riverside at 5 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Bakersfield Classic.

Wong delivered an RBI single in the first and SBCC made it 3-0 in the second on RBI hits from Lauren Takayesu and Lisa Zeitlin.

  Vaqueros earn split at tourney
Wong hits first homer in 6-2 win over Bakersfield

Janelle Wong went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs on Sunday as SBCC downed Bakersfield 6-2 to earn a split on the final day of the Bakersfield Classic. In the first game, the Vaqueros missed a chance to beat Riverside in the bottom of the seventh and lost 8-2 in eight innings.
Wong, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, hit her first home run of the season in the nightcap, a two-run shot to center in the seventh inning. Laura Cannon went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Lisa Zeitlin was 2-4. Joan Cannon stole four bases on the day for the Vaqueros (12-8).
Sara Gazzaniga (1-1) tossed a six-hitter with six strikeouts and got nine outs on pop-ups.
In the first game, the Vaqueros tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the seventh. Joan Cannon and Amanda Sharp opened with singles and both scored on a double by Lindsie Holloway. Holloway moved to third on a wild pitch and might have scored on Zeitlin's fly ball to right but she left third base on contact and was doubled up after the catch.
"It was heartbreaking, Lindsie just lost her mind for a moment," said coach Paula Congleton. "She had a great day, knocking in both our runs and hitting the ball hard several times."
Joan Cannon had two hits for the Vaqueros, who went 2-1 in the two-day tourney.
SBCC will play six games in six days, starting with Tuesday's WSC home doubleheader against Hancock at 1 p.m.

Vaqueros pile up 25 runs in sweep
Carrillo belts grand slam; Wong ends 2nd game with 3-run blast

Jeana Carrillo hit a grand slam and tossed a five-hitter in the first game on Tuesday and Janelle Wong ended the second game with a three-run blast to left field as SBCC swept Hancock in a WSC softball doubleheader at Pershing Park. The scores were 15-4 in the five-inning opener and 10-2 in the nightcap, which ended in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule.
Wong, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, had two doubles and two RBIs in the first game for the Vaqueros (14-8, 4-3), who've won three in a row and boosted their home record to 8-1. Joan Cannon had a two-run double in a five-run first inning and knocked in another run in the second, when SBCC erupted for 10 runs.
Carrillo hit the grand slam, her first homer of the year, in the 10-run inning and Wong drove in two with a double down the left-field line. "We practiced against slower pitching on Monday and concentrated on staying back in the hitting zone," said Carrillo, a freshman from Lompoc High. "I got a high ball on the grand slam. That's my favorite pitch."
It marked the second time in six days that the Vaqueros have scored 10 runs in an inning.
"We came out strong in the first game with five runs and that set the pace of the game," said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. "We didn't have any preconceptions of who Hancock was ... we just know that for conference we have to play our game and play hard."
Carrillo held the Bulldogs (3-11, 1-7) to one run on three hits in the first 4 1/3 innings. Nicole Adair scored three runs in the opener while Laura Cannon and Kellee Venturi each had two hits. Venturi capped the 10-run second with an RBI triple to right field.
In the second game, Liliana Caughman tossed a four-hitter and didn't allow a run until Alyssa Ray homered to lead off the sixth.
The Vaqueros took a 5-0 lead in the second, capped by Laura Cannon's two-run single. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth on RBI singles from Laura Cannon and pinch-hitter Kailey Snyder. After Hancock scored twice in the sixth, Adair and Laura Cannon walked in the bottom of the sixth and Wong followed with her second homer in three games.

Snyder tosses six-hitter with eight strikeouts

Two days after scoring 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep, SBCC's bats were quieted by Cuesta's Rachel Thompson, who pitched a four-hitter on Thursday in a 6-2 WSC softball victory at San Luis Obispo.
Freshman Kailey Snyder held the Cougars to six hits and struck out eight. Amanda Sharp went 2-3 with an RBI double in the sixth for the Vaqueros (14-9, 4-4), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
"We had some mental and physical errors," said coach Paula Congleton.
Laura Cannon staked SBCC to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Lisa Zeitlin in the first.
Santa Barbara will host the Bash at the Beach this weekend at Pershing Park. The Vaqueros will take on El Camino and Golden West at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Saddleback and L.A. Valley at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.

SBCC bashes 22 runs in two wins
Gazzinaga tosses 2-hitter; Wong has big day at plate

SBCC bashed its way to a pair of lopsided softball victories on Saturday on the first day of its own Bash at the Beach at Pershing Park. The Vaqueros downed El Camino 9-1 in six innings and then used a 10-run inning to rout Golden West 13-2 in five innings.
Santa Barbara (16-9) and Saddleback (23-6) were the only teams to go 2-0 on the first day of the six-team tourney. SBCC has won five straight at home and is 10-1 at Pershing Park this year.
Sara Gazzaniga (2-1) tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener with two strikeouts and no walks.
"I felt really good," said Gazzaniga, a freshman from Hermosa Beach. "I haven't really been 'on' when I've played at home. Today, my screwball and curveball were working. Pitching a good game like this will boost my confidence."
Janelle Wong continued her hot hitting, going 3-4 in the opener with two RBIs. Wong, a freshman from Dos Pueblos High, has doubled in her last three games. For the day, she went 4-7 with two doubles and five RBIs.
Laura Cannon was 2-4 with three RBIs and Kailey Snyder was 2-3 with a triple for the Vaqueros, who broke open a 2-0 game with two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Lindsie Holloway delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to boost the lead to 6-0.
The Vaqueros send 15 batters to the plate in the second inning of the second game and scored 10 runs on eight hits, highlighted by a three-run double from Wong and two hits and three RBIs by Jasmyne Holmes.
Amazingly, it was the third 10-run inning in the last 10 days for the Vaqueros. SBCC had 22 runs on 26 hits on the day with seven doubles and three triples.
"The kids are making good contact with the ball," said coach Paula Congleton. "We've really been concentrating on driving through the ball."
Center fielder Joan Cannon was 3-3 with three RBIs and two runs in the win over Golden West.
"When we start gettting hits, we get pumped up and like to keep it going," said Cannon. "We love to cheer for each other."

SBCC claims Bash at the Beach title
Snyder sparkles in opener; Vaqueros split on final day

Kailey Snyder used her arm and bat to spark SBCC to a 6-1 softball win over Saddleback on Sunday and the Vaqueros went on to capture their own Bash at the Beach tournament despite losing the afternoon game to L.A. Valley, 7-2.
SBCC, Saddleback and Golden West all finished with 3-1 records in the two-day event at Pershing Park but the Vaqueros won the title, thanks to a 30-28 advantage in runs scored over Saddleback. It's the first Bash at the Beach crown for Santa Barbara since 2006.
The Vaqueros are 17-10 on the year while Saddleback is 24-7.
"I'm so happy with our kids, that was a great win against a team that has more than 40 home runs," said coach Paula Congleton, whose club is 11-2 at home. "My outfield has to got to be among the top three in the state. They made three catches that probably saved three home runs."
Center fielder Joan Cannon caught two balls while falling over the temporary fence in the first three innings of the first game. Lauren Takayesu did the same thing in left in the second inning and then started a double play by catching a line drive in the fifth.
Snyder went 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs. She entered the pitching circle with one out in the fourth, her team ahead 3-1 and runners at first and third. After walking the first batter, she got out of the jam with two straight strikeouts.
"I'm always kind of nervous in those situations but I just have to picture no runners on base and act like it's the beginning of the inning," said Snyder, who gave up just one hit in 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and four walks.
Liliana Caughman (3-1) and Snyder combined on a three-hitter.
The Vaqueros took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Saddleback on RBI singles by Janelle Wong and Snyder. Takayesu doubled in the second and made it 3-0 by scoring on a passed ball. The lead grew to 5-0 in the sixth on four consecutive singles by Snyder, Kellee Venturi, Jasmyne Holmes and Takayesu plus an outfield error.
In the second game, Belen Benitez held the Vaqueros to six hits. Paty Martinez drove in a run with a single in the second to stake SBCC to a 1-0 lead. Valley answered with two in the third and added five unearned runs in the fifth and sixth on five Vaquero errors.
Did the Vaqueros run out of gas or was it an emotional letdown from the Saddleback win?
"I think it was a combination," said Congleton. "I think we expected to win before we even played Valley. We were a little complacent, our bats didn't come out very strong. When Valley started pushing us up against the wall, we got tight and couldn't hit."
Laura Cannon had two hits and drove in her twin sister Joan with the second run in the seventh.
"We would have like to have gone 4-0 but it's still great to win our tournament," Congleton concluded. "We told the girls not to let one game take away from a great weekend. We scored a lot of runs with a lot of great hitting and great defense. And we're 11-2 at home -- that's a great record."
The Vaqueros return to WSC play on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Ventura.

Adair had a two-run triple in the fourth that put the visitors ahead 4-1. Snyder, who had a double and triple, held the Pirates to three hits in the final three innings. Liliana Caughman got the win to improve to 4-1, allowing two runs on four hits in the first four innings.
Jasmyne Holmes, the Vaqueros second baseman, lost a flyball in the sun on the second batter and the ball hit her in the left eye. She received four stiches in her eyelid.

    Oxnard rallies past Vaqueros
Laura Cannon has two homers, six RBIs in 13-9 loss

Oxnard overcame a 9-3 deficit with eight runs in the sixth on Thursday at Pershing Park and went on to defeat SBCC 13-9 in a WSC Gold Division game.
The loss spoiled a spectacular offensive performance by Vaquero shortstop Laura Cannon, who had two homers, a three-run double and six RBIs in the first four innings. She finished 3-for-4.
"The pitches I hit (on the homers) were both inside and I just got around on them," said Cannon, a freshman from Berkeley. "We just didn't have it on defense today."
Santa Barbara (18-12, 5-6) led 9-2 after Cannon opened the fourth inning with her second homer of the season. Kandace Amaro and Brystal Hood homered for the Condors (15-13, 6-6), who collected 16 hits off four Vaquero hurlers.
"Six RBIs -- that was an outstanding effort by Laura," said coach Paula Congleton. "For the defense and the rest of her teammates not to back that up ... we got nine runs and that should have been ample to win the game. We mentally and physically fell apart on defense. I made a couple of defensive changes because I had to. Our pitchers were flat today."
The Vaqueros committed seven errors and five of the eight runs in the sixth were unearned.
Lisa Zeitlin had two hits and scored two runs and Elicity Fabing went 2-4 with an RBI single in the third.
"We've got to brush this off," said Congleton. "We've got to come back and play as hard as we can."

Vaqueros roll 10-2 to gain split
Martinez hits first homer, knocks in six runs in twinbill

Paty Martinez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs on Tuesday, helping SBCC down Moorpark 10-2 and earn a split of a WSC Gold Division doubleheader at Pershing Park. Santa Barbara scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to win it on the eight-run rule.
The Vaqueros (18-13, 6-7) dropped the opener 8-7 on a solo homer by Moorpark catcher Taylor Neumann in the top of the seventh. SBCC rallied from a 5-1 deficit and tied it at 7 in the sixth on a two-run single from Laura Cannon and Janelle Wong's bloop single to right that scored Cannon. The Vaqueros committed four errors in the first three innings, leading to five unearned runs.
"The errors are starting to creep up on us and it's a lack of mental concentration," said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. "We've got to be aggressive and charge the ball."
Amanda Sharp went 4-for-4 in the nightcap and scored two runs while Kailey Snyder was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Elicity Fabing and Lindsie Holloway both had two hits in the first game.
Martinez, a freshman second baseman from Lompoc High, went 4-for-7 on the day with her first homer, a double and six RBIs. Her two-run single in the fifth inning of the second game stretched the lead to 7-2.
"I made an error in the first inning of the first game and coach got on me," noted Martinez, who hit a solo home run in the second inning of the nightcap. "My bat hasn't been too good lately, so I figured I needed to step it up."
Snyder, who tossed a six-hitter in Game 2, had a run-scoring single in the sixth. Fabing and Nicole Adair followed with RBI singles to end the game for the Vaqueros, who are 12-3 at home. Jamie Yeller spoiled Snyder's shutout bid with a two-run homer in the sixth for Moorpark (17-16, 8-4).
"We had 16 hits and scored 10 runs in the second game after having five errors in the first one," said Congleton. "That's been the inconsistency of our season. We're consistently inconsistent."

Joan Cannon went 3-for-5 and Lindsie Holloway had a two-run double during a five-run sixth inning on Saturday, guiding SBCC past L.A. Valley 7-2 in a nonconference softball game at East L.A. In the second game, East L.A. rallied for a 4-3 win in Monterey Park.
Sara Gazzaniga and Kailey Snyder combined on a three-hitter in the opener with Snyder striking out five in 3 1/3 innings of relief for the Vaqueros (20-14). Janelle Wong had two singles and an RBI while Nicole Adair had two of Santa Barbara's 14 hits.
Laura Cannon staked the Vaqueros to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning of the nightcap. She leads the squad with three homers. SBCC scored in the sixth to go ahead 3-1 before the Huskies rallied for two in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Martinez knocks in five runs; Vaqueros win 12-0 and 15-1

SBCC's Kailey Snyder tossed a no-hitter in a 12-0 WSC softball victory over L.A. Pierce on Tuesday and Paty Martinez went 3-for-3 with two triples and five RBIs. In the nightcap at Woodland Hills, the Vaqueros won 15-1 behind three hits and four RBIs by Kellee Venturi. Both games were shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.
Snyder, a freshman from St. Joseph High, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter for the Vaqueros (22-14, 8-7 WSC Gold Division), who've won four of their last five. She would have had a perfect game if not for a first-inning error. Martinez had a three-run triple during a six-run second inning. Laura Cannon went 2-4 with two RBIs and Amanda Sharp was 2-4 with an RBI.
In the second game, Jeana Carrillo threw a three-hitter with two strikeouts. Venturi went 3-4 with four RBIs and Nicole Adair was 2-3 for Santa Barbara, which scored five in the third inning and seven in the fifth.
The Vaqueros took the season series 3-0 against a Pierce team that has just one win this year.
"Sometimes when you play a struggling team, you don't play your best but we were sharp today," said coach Paula Congleton. "The fences are deep here and we hit some bombs."

Joan Cannon goes 4-4 with three steals in 9-2 win

Two days after throwing a no-hitter, Kailey Snyder turned in a spectacular relief effort for SBCC on Thursday, allowing just one hit with 13 strikeouts in five innings of a 9-2 softball victory over Hancock in Santa Maria.
Leadoff hitter Joan Cannon went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, an RBI and a walk for the Vaqueros (23-14, 9-7), who posted their third straight win and fifth in six games. They've outscored their opponents 36-3 in the last three outings.
Snyder, a freshman from St. Joseph in Santa Maria, entered in the third inning with her team ahead 3-2. She fanned 13 of 17 hitters with no walks and one hit batter. In her last two games, the right-hander has allowed one hit in 10 innings with 20 strikeouts and zero walks.
"Kailey pitched great and Joan made an outstanding catch (in center field) in the first inning, running about 30 feet and diving to get the last out with two runners on," said coach Paula Congleton.
Nicole Adair had a two-run triple during a five-run fifth-inning uprising and Elicity Fabing added a run-scoring double.
The Vaqueros will play their final games on Tuesday in a 1 p.m. home doubleheader with Cuesta.
