Requirements for Registration in Fall 2012

Students Enrolled in Spring 2012 on Disqualification

There are two options for Fall 2012 registration for students on disqualification.  SBCC strongly recommends that you complete Option #1 (see below) which will not only help you achieve academic success but will allow you to register for Fall 2012 classes in May 2012 versus Option #2 (see below) where a student must wait until July 2012.  Option #1 will also clear you to register for Summer 2012 classes.

Option #1 - Registration for Fall 2012 prior to the end of the Spring 2012 semester -

To register for Fall 2012 prior to the end of the Spring 2012 semester, you must complete 3 tasks:

1)  Copy of a Spring 2012 Student Success Plan (Must complete from February 6 to March 23)

Make an appointment to meet with a Success Counselor in the Academic Counseling Center (Student Services 120) to create a Student Success Plan that will help you overcome obstacles and get back on track.  The best time to meet with a Success Counselor is in February.   Before your Counselor meeting, you will need to complete the Student Success Homework.  Students who are taking only online classes or whose work schedule does not allow them to meet with a Success Counselor can complete an Online Student Success Plan.

2) Completed Spring 2012 Midterm Grade Report (Must complete from February 21 to March 23)

You must meet with your instructors to obtain a Spring 2012 Midterm Grade Report for all of your Spring 2012 classes.

3) “Request to Register for Fall 2012 Prior to the End of Spring 2012” form - (Must complete by March 23, 2012)

You must attach a copy of your Spring 2012 Student Success Plan and Midterm Grade Report to the "Request to Register for Fall 2012 Prior to the End of Spring 2012" and submit all documents within the prescribed time line.  Incomplete forms will not be processed.

Very Important:  If you submit the above documentation in the prescribed timeline you will be able to pre-register for Fall 2012 courses prior to the end of the Spring 2012 semester.  However, if you do not return to Good Standing or earn Disqualification Exception status by the end of Spring 2012, your Fall 2012 classes will be dropped unless you file a Petition for Reinstatement.  If you are reinstated, unit limitations may apply and you may need to adjust your Fall 2012 schedule.  Fall 2012 Petitions for Reinstatement will be mailed to you at the end of June, 2012.

Option #2 – Registration for Fall 2012 after the end of the Spring 2012 semester – If you fail to complete Option #1 in the prescribed timeline you will have to wait until your Spring 2012 grades post to your transcript (July 2012) and will need to file and have approved a Fall 2012 Petition for Reinstatement to be eligible to attend SBCC in Fall 2012.  Students who earn Good Standing or Disqualification Exception status at the end of Spring 2012 will not have to Petition for Reinstatement to attend Fall 2012.

Students Not Enrolled in Spring 2012 on Disqualification

Student Success Counseling and Student Success Plans
Student Success Counselors are available in the Academic Counseling Center in Spring 2012 by appointment and are here to help you achieve academic success.  Student Success Counselors work with you personally to create a Student Success Plan to help you to overcome your obstacles and get back on track.  The best time in Spring 2012 to meet individually with a Student Success Counselor is in February as appointments are limited.  Students who wait until late in the semester may not be able to meet individually with a Student Success Counselor. Before you meet with a Student Success Counselor, you must complete the Student Success Homework and bring to your Counseling appointment.
The Student Success Plan that you create with your Student Success Counselor will:

  • Map out your goals
  • Identify your greatest strengths and values
  • Identify your motivation and how to increase it
  • Identify your obstacles to student success and specific actions you can take to overcome them
  • Identify important resources for student success

Let Student Success Counselors help you to get back on track and earn the success that you deserve.

Online Options to Complete the Student Success Plan
Students who are taking only online classes, or whose work schedule does not allow them to meet personally with a Student Success Counselor can contact Matt Lorenzen at lorenzen@sbcc.edu for information on how to complete an online option of the Student Success Plan.  If you plan to complete an Online Option for the Student Success Plan, please contact Matt Lorenzen in February 2012.

Student Success Tips

  1. If you are on Academic Probation or Academic Disqualification and you know your current SBCC Cumulative G.P.A. and the number of units attempted  (those with grades of A,B,C,D or F) you can go to the WSU GPA Calculator and enter the G.P.A. you desire to calculate the credits and grades you need to improve your current Grade Point Average (enter G.P.A. of at least a 2.0). If you do not know this information you can get it by viewing your Transcript. The G.P.A. Calculator does not take into account coursework that you may plan to repeat. But the calculator will tell you how many units and what grade level you would need if you do not repeat courses in which you previously earned a "D" or "F"
  2. Meet with an Academic Counselor in the Counseling Center to develop or update your Student Educational Plan (S.E.P.). Be sure to identify courses where repeating makes sense.
  3. If you have already repeated classes in which you earned a "D" or "F" grade you need to submit a petition for use of Most Recent Grade in a Repeated Course. If you do not petition, the prior grade is still being included in your SBCC G.P.A.
  4. PD 100 – College Success. Almost everyone can use some help with test taking, study skills, time management, money management, relationship skills, self-esteem, goal setting and memory skills.
  5. A lack of direction and goals to which you are committed can be one reason why your past record has resulted in "D" "F", "W" or "No Pass" grades. A lack of direction and lack of goals is a major motivation sapper. Meet with a Career Counselor in the College's Career Advancement Center for assistance with selecting a major, identifying career options and setting meaningful life goals.
  6. Skills preparation is also a major cause of low grades. Knowing your English and math skill assessment levels is essential to selecting classes. Improving your English and math skills will almost always result in improvement in other courses if your reading, writing and/or math skill are holding you back. If you have not already done so enroll in and complete the English and math assessment offered through the college Assessment Center and enroll in English and math each semester until you earn eligibility for at least college level English and math. If you have completed assessment or know your assessment levels choose your classes based on appropriate skills advisories and/or pre-requisite that are listed under the course descriptions in the Schedule of Classes.
  7. Talk to your instructor as soon as you experience any difficulty. Find out how you can perform better on tests and papers. If you do not understand concepts say so and press your instructor for understanding. Take the time to visit your instructors during their office hours. Don't rely on catching them for few moments before or after class.
  8. Monitor your course progress and ask for feedback from your instructor. There may be times when you do need to withdraw from a course but getting feedback from your instructor early in the semester can be the key to earning a successful grade.
  9. Show up to class. Be on time. The number one common characteristic of students who earn "F" or "D", "W" or "No Pass" grades is that they missed more than two classes and/or were regularly late for class.
  10. Check out and use the services of the Learning Resources Center
  11. Avoid taking too many units particularly if you work more than 20 hours a week. Working too many hours is the number one reason students cite for getting unproductive grades. Consult with a Financial Aid Adviser to see if there are options to working so much while going to school.
  12. Avoid taking too many units in a semester in order to catch up in a hurry. If you have not been able to complete six or nine units with "C" or better grades your chances of earning "B"s and "A"s in 12 – 15 units in one semester are pretty slim. It is better to take 6 – 9 units and earn "B" and "A" grades than it is to take 12 units and earn only a "C" average. Once you master six to nine units with a "B" average then increase your course load by increments of three units a term as long as you can continue to earn higher than a 2.0 G.P.A.
  13. The life of a student trying to manage school, work, relationships, family and a personal life while remaining physically and psychologically healthy can be challenging. Traumatic or disruptive events can occur when we least expect them. If you need assistance check out the many confidential services available through the Health and Wellness Center. Consider reducing your alcohol intake. Your grades will suffer due to misuse of alcohol. Some students who have been placed on probation or disqualification report that living in or partying in Isla Vista was a major contributor to their poor academic performance. You may want to consider another living environment.
  14. As the student, you are responsible for dropping classes by the stated deadlines. If you register in a class and later change your mind, it is your responsibility to drop the class. Review your Schedule/Bill for course deadlines. Log in to http://pipeline.sbcc.edu and go to Registration and Student Records. Follow the instructions on the Add/Drop Classes page for dropping a class.
  15. Check out the Student Success Web Resources page that has online resources for 58 topics concerning personal and academic success.
