SBCC Probation/Disqualification Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

Requirements for Fall or Spring if Reinstated
  • I was reinstated for Fall or Spring, am I required to do anything else?  In the 3rd to 4th week of the semester, SBCC will send you a disqualification or probation notification (mailing address and SBCC Pipeline email) detailing what you must do as a student enrolled at SBCC on disqualification or probation.  Students on disqualification are required to meet with a Student Success Counselor and complete a Midterm Grade Report within a prescribed timeline.
Dropping and Adding a Class with a Disqualification Hold
  • I have a disqualification hold that is preventing me from dropping a class - What do I do?  Please contact Admissions and Records who can assist you in dropping a class.
  • I have a disqualification hold that is preventing me from adding a class - what do I do?  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/probation for information about what you need to do to remove your disqualification hold so that you can add classes.
Disqualification and Probation Rules
  • Why have I been placed on probation and/or disqualification?  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/academicstatuspolicies/ for information on probation and disqualification policies.
  • How can I be removed from probation and/or disqualification?  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/academicstatuspolicies/ for information on how to return to Good Standing.
  • What is the difference between academic and progress probation/disqualification?  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/academicstatuspolicies/ for information on progress and academic probation and disqualification policies.
  • I have substandard grades (D or F) from many years back, do these affect my academic probation or academic disqualification status?  Yes.  Your academic probation or academic disqualification status is based on your cumulative grade point average which is the sum total of all units taken at SBCC.
  • I have "W", "NP/NC" and "I" grades from many years back, do these affect my progress probation or disqualification status?  "W", "NP/NC", and "I" grades since 1983 are used in the calculation of progress probation or disqualification.
Petitions for Reinstatement
  • I submitted my Petition for Reinstatement, how long does it take to process?  There is a 7 business day turn around on the processing of Reinstatement Petitions.
  • I turned in a Petition for Reinstatement, and was reinstated, does this mean that I am off of disqualification?  No.  You have been reinstated at SBCC as a student on disqualification which enables you to enroll in classes in the term that you were reinstated.  To be removed from disqualification status, please see www.sbcc.edu/academicstatuspolicies/.
  • I took classes in Spring and am now on disqualification, do I need to file and have approved a Fall Petition for Reinstatement to take classes in Fall?  Yes.  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/probation for Fall Petitions for Reinstatement.
  • I am on disqualification and took a break for one or more semesters (Fall or Spring terms) and am now hoping to return to SBCC - What do I need to do?  Please see www.sbcc.edu/probation for information on what you need to do to enroll in an upcoming term.
Financial Aid Probation and Disqualification
  • Is Financial Aid Probation and Disqualification the same thing as probation and disqualification for SBCC?  No.  For information about Financial Aid Probation and Disqualification, please contact the Financial Aid office.
Summer Classes and Disqualification
  • I want to register for Summer and but I have a disqualification hold, what do I do?  Please go to www.sbcc.edu/probation for information on how to register for Summer as a student on disqualification.
  • I need to drop my Summer class but I have a disqualification hold, what do I do?  Please contact Admissions and Records who can assist you in dropping a class.
  • Will I be dropped from my Summer classes for reasons related to disqualification?  No.  SBCC does not drop students from Summer classes for reasons related to disqualification.
