Focus, fitness are keys for freshman Miles Seemann kept his eye on the prize Saturday and came away with the Southern Cal
Regional championship at Irvine Valley College.
The SBCC freshman from Santa Ynez High was seeded sixth in the 40-player draw. He
knocked off No. 12 Ales Modry of Saddleback 6-1, 6-0, then beat No. 4 Parker Kelley
of College of the Desert 6-1, 6-4 in the final.
"Miles really came to play," said coach Ryan Heinberg. "Everybody was dead after
a lot of tennis over three days. It was impressive to see his level of focus throughout
the tournament.
"The final was closer than the score indicates. Miles never let up for a moment. He's
the best in Southern Cal -- that's awesome."
Seemann and Joshua Crisp-Jones were seeded fifth in doubles. They lost to top-seeded
Kelley and Josh Banks of Desert 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, which were played
after the singles at 2 p.m. Seemann and Crisp-Jones will represent the Vaqueros in
singles and doubles in the State Finals on May 10-12 at the Balboa Tennis Club in
San Diego.
This is the second straight week that Seemann has made at least the quarterfinals
of a major tournament -- he was a quarterrfinalist in singles and a semifinalist in
doubles at The Ojai.
