Friday, April 29 -- 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.

Vaquero doubles teams fall at Ojai

 A pair of SBCC men’s doubles teams were eliminated in the Round of 16 on Friday at the 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.
 Regis Fastrez and Che Borja fell to Andre Almeida-David Cortina of Reedley 6-4, 6-3 at the Oxnard Tennis Center. Troy Akin and Rob Herr were eliminated by Kaplan Kaster-Matt Mims of Grossmont 7-5. 6-3.  


Thursday, April 28 -- 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.

Two doubles reach third round at Ojai

 Two SBCC doubles teams reached the third round on the first day of the prestigious 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.
 Regis Fastrez-Che Borja and Troy Akin-Rob Herr both had first-round byes, then swept their second-round matches. Fastrez-Borja beat Nic Bacchini-Bgary Peiffer of Folsom Lake 6-2, 6-0 at the Oxnard Tennis Center and will take on a team from Reedley in Friday’s third round at 12:30 p.m.
 Akin-Herr knocked off Phillip Nguyen-Lyle Thomassin of Mission 6-0, 6-2 to reach the third round.
 In singles, Fastrez and John Rosenkvist got to the second round before losing while Akin was eliminated in the first round, falling to David Mejia of Fresno City 6-1, 6-3.
 Fastrez blanked Tung Vu of Mission 6-0, 6-0, then lost to No. 6 seed Oliver Andrzejczuk of Cypress 6-3, 6-3. Rosenkvist rallied to beat Nik Tummala of Folsom Lake 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to Jony Chai of Cerritos 6-0, 6-1.
 “This was a pretty good first day,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “Ojai features schools from all over the state and it’s the top three from each school. If we win on Friday, we get to play in Ojai, so that’s what we’re shooting for.” 


Saturday, April 16 -- WSC Tournament, Day 2 at Ventura College.

SBCC loses five matches at WSC tourney

 It wasn’t a good day for SBCC on Saturday as the Vaqueros dropped five matches in the Round of 16 at the WSC Men’s Tennis Tournament. Saturday’s winners earned spots in the Southern Cal Individual Regional.
 Regis Fastrez and Troy Akin both fell in straight sets in singles.
 The best match of the day for the Vaqueros came in doubles as Akin and Rob Herr dropped a three-setter to Ventura’s top team of Sasha Hedberg and Dylan Cleary, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
 SBCC will send five players to the prestigious Ojai Tournament on April 28-May 1 -- Fastrez, Akin and John Rosenkvist in singles, along with Fastrez-Che Borja and Akin-Herr in doubles. 


Friday, April 15 -- WSC Tournament at Ventura College.

2 singles, 3 doubles advance at WSC tourney

 SBCC’s top two singles players won their matches on Friday to move into the Round of 16 in the WSC Tournament at Ventura College.
 Regis Fastrez and Troy Akin captured their first-round matches while Simi El Azzouzi, John Rosenkvist, Rob Herr, Che Borja and Justin Kautz were eliminated.
 Borja-Rosenkvist won their doubles match and will play in today’s Round of 16, along with Fastrez-El Azzouzi and Akin-Herr, who had byes.
 Saturday’s winners will advance to the Southern Cal Regional on May 5-7 at College of the Desert in Palm Desert.


Friday, April 8 -- Ventura at SBCC, 2 p.m.  Ventura 9, SBCC 0  Records: 1-11, 1-7 WSC

Ventura too much for Vaqueros in WSC finale

 Ventura topped SBCC 9-0 on Friday at Pershing Park, extending its WSC win streak in men's tennis to 58 matches. The defending state champion Pirates (12-1, 8-0) won their sixth straight conference title this season.
 SBCC fell to 1-11 and 1-7 after playing its third match in four days
 “They’re a solid team that showed a lot of depth and experience,” said Vaquero coach Ryan Heinberg.
 Simo El Azzouzi played the closest match of the day, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Jonathan Lin at No. 3 singles.
 SBCC will compete in the WSC Tournament on April 15-16 at Ventura.

Thursday, April 7 -- Riverside at SBCC, 2 p.m.  Riverside 5, SBCC 4  Record: 1-10

Vaqueros drop another heartbreaker

 SBCC lost three out of four 10-point tiebreakers on Thursday in a 5-4 nonconference men’s tennis setback to Riverside at Pershing Park.
 It was the fourth 5-4 loss of the season for the Vaqueros (1-10). Riverside is 14-4.
 “This match was so close,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “If we’d won just one more of the pro-set tiebreakers, we would have won the match.”
 Simo El Azzouzi posted the only split-set singles win for Santa Barbara by beating Vlises Banos 6-7, 7-5 (10-5). John Rosenkvist also won in singles, Troy Akin-Che Borja captured the No. 2 doubles 8-5 and the Vaqueros took the third doubles by injury default.
 SBCC will play its third match in four days on Friday when it wraps up WSC play by hosting Ventura at 2 p.m.

Grossmont edges Vaqueros 5-4

 Grossmont took a 2-0 lead before Friday’s nonconference men’s tennis match due to defaults and went on to beat SBCC 5-4 at Pershing Park.
 The Vaqueros (0-9) had to forfeit the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles because they only had five players. Troy Akin and Simo El Azzouzi posted singles wins while Azzouzi-Regis Fastrez and Akin-Che Borja prevailed in doubles.
 The Vaqueros host Bakersfield on Tuesday.

Pierce beats Vaqueros 9-0

 L.A. Pierce won 11 of 12 singles sets on Thursday and went on to beat SBCC 9-0 in a WSC men’s tennis match at Woodland Hills. The Brahmas (6-6, 3-2) took the first meeting with the Vaqueros 6-3.
 Simo El Azzouzi split his sets at No. 3 singles for the Vaqueros (0-8, 0-6) before falling 10-8 to Sean Dullaghan in the pro tiebreaker.
 The Vaqueros will open a four-match homestand on April 1 with a nonconference match against Grossmont.

 SBCC falls to Glendale 6-3
El Azzouzi wins in singles and doubles

 Simo El Azzouzi posted victories in singles and doubles on Tuesday but Glendale still got past SBCC 6-3 in a WSC match at Glendale.
 El Azzouzi posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and Rob Herr prevailed in the No. 5 spot. El Azzouzi teamed up with John Rosenkvist to win the No. 3 doubles 8-4.
 SBCC fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the WSC. Glendale is in second place at 4-1.
 “Glendale is a tough team and they have a little more experience than we do,“ said coach Ryan Heinberg.
 The Vaqueros will complete a four-game road trip on Thursday against L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills.

 Bakersfield edges Vaqueros 5-4
Fastrez-Herr, Akin-Borja post doubles wins

 
SBCC dropped close battles at Nos. 1 and 4 singles on Thursday and suffered a 5-4 WSC men’s tennis loss at Bakersfield.
 Tyler Thoms topped Regis Fastrez 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 and John Rosenkvist fell 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4. Troy Akin and Justin Kautz recorded singles wins for the Vaqueros (0-6, 0-4).
 Fastrez-Rob Herr and Akin-Che Borja collected doubles wins.
 “It was another close one,” said SBCC coach Ryan Heinberg. “The guys battled hard and we had our opportunities.”
 After taking next week off, the Vaqueros open the second round of WSC play on Tuesday, March 22 at Glendale.

Fastrez-Herr get doubles win

 Ventura College swept all six singles matches Thursday on the way to an 8-1 WSC victory over SBCC on the Ventura courts.
 Regis Fastrez and Rob Herr posted the win for the Vaqueros (0-5, 0-3 WSC) at No. 1 doubles. Ventura, the defending state champion, improved to 3-0 and 2-0.
 The Vaqueros travel to Bakersfield on Thursday.

 L.A. Pierce won a tight match at No. 5 singles on the way to a 6-3 win over SBCC 6-3 in a WSC match at Pershing Park. Nathan Crosby edged Rob Herr of the Vaqueros 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) at No. 5 singles and the Brahmas won another three-setter at No. 3.
 Troy Akin posted SBCC’s singles win with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 decision at No. 4. Akin, who also won in doubles with Regis Fastrez, is 3-0 in singles.
 The Vaqueros (0-4, 0-2 WSC) travel to Ventura on Thursday.

Akin gets another singles win

 Glendale took five of six singles matches Thursday and went on to beat SBCC 7-2 in a WSC men’s tennis opener at Pershing Park.
 “Glendale came out firing,“ said Santa Barbara coach Ryan Heinberg. “They’ve played eight matches and they looked like the more experienced team.”
 Freshman Troy Akin won his second straight match at No. 5 singles (6-2, 5-7, 10-3 tiebreaker) for the hometown Vaqueros (0-3, 0-1). John Rosenkvist and Rob Herr posted a doubles victory.
 The Vaqueros' home match on Friday against Cypress has been postponed by rain. They'll host L.A. Pierce on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Vaqueros fall 6-3 in home debut
 
Ivanov, Akin post singles wins

 Mt. San Jacinto won four of six singles matches and went on to defeat SBCC 6-3 on Tuesday, spoiling the home opener for the men’s tennis team.
 “We had some guys out with eligibility issues but the guys who played really competed,” said coach Ryan Heinberg.
  Nikolay Ivanov and Troy Akin registered wins at No. 1 and 5 singles, respectively, for the Vaqueros (0-2). The doubles team of Akin and Che Borja also prevailed 6-0, 6-4.
 The Vaqueros open WSC play on Thursday with a 2 p.m. home match against Glendale.

San Diego Mesa edges Vaqueros 5-4
Five matches decided by third-set tiebreaker

 After a four-hour van ride and an afternoon scrimmage, SBCC battled San Diego Mesa to the wire before dropping a 5-4 decision on Thursday in its men’s tennis opener at San Diego.
 The Vaqueros met Grossmont earlier Thursday, playing one set each in a scrimmage at El Cajon.
 Nikolay Ivanov, Rob Herr and Luiz Melges posted singles wins for the Vaqueros, who went 2-3 in third-set tiebreakers. The tiebreaker format was the first one to 10 points with a two-point winning margin.
 Regis Fastrez and Herr tied the match at 4-4 with a 6-1, 4-6, (11-9) victory over Stanislav Magarchento and Sean Moazezi at No. 2 doubles. San Diego Mesa prevailed with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph in No. 3 doubles.
 “We battled really well for a young team in its first match,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “I’m looking forward to watching these guys improve.”
 The Vaqueros make their home debut on Feb. 22 against Mt. San Jacinto.
