Stingy Vaqueros take second in WSC
SBCC has 12 shutouts, reaches 2nd round of playoffs
The SBCC men’s soccer team featured one of the best defensive units in school history, allowing just 14 goals in 22 games
on the way to a runner-up finish in the Western State Conference.
The Vaqueros (16-3-3) were in first place all season until the final week when they went 0-1-1 and Oxnard slipped past them
to win the title by one point (34-33). Santa Barbara was denied a third straight conference crown despite an impressive 10-1-3
record.
SBCC is 32-3-7 in WSC play over the last three years. The Vaqueros were also tough at home this season with a 10-1-1 mark,
including a 10-1 victory over Glendale on Nov. 2.
Freshman goalie Yonha Adrabi earned first-team All-WSC honors, along with Pierre Mattsson, Kalum Horne and Roberto Santana.
Nikolai Littleton, an honorable mention all-conference pick, led the team with nine goals. Horne had eight and Mattsson, a
freshman from Sweden, had seven, including six game-winners.
Mattsson suffered an injury in the second-to-last game of the regular season against Canyons and the Vaquero offense was
never the same. They staged a miraculous comeback against WSC rival Hancock in the first round of the playoffs with Horne
scoring two goals in the last three minutes to tie the game at 2-2.
SBCC advanced to the second round with a 5-4 win in penalty kicks. The Vaqueros’ season ended three days later with a 1-0
loss at San Diego City College. They were ranked No. 7 in the final state poll and No. 4 in Southern Cal.
Adrabi recorded 12 shutouts, including seven in a row in the early season. He was one of the top goalkeepers in the state
with a 0.63 goals-against average.
The Vaqueros were 13-0-2 in September and October.
“We got to the second round of the playoffs and only lost three games,” said coach John Sisterson, after improving his four-year
record to 57-22-11. “This is a young group and I’m very pleased with our season.”
