Vaqueros come up short in Regional
Gorski can’t keep momentum after opening 74
Trevor Gorski shot a promising 74 in the opening round of the Southern Cal Regional
on Monday but couldn’t keep it going at Glendora Country Club.
Gorski, one of two SBCC players competing as individuals, was in familiar surroundings
as a graduate of Glendora High. The freshman eagled the 322-yard, par-4 eighth hole
in the first round but shot 82 in the second round and finished at 12-over 156.
SBCC’s David Aarons, a sophomore from Santa Barbara High, shot 85 and 80 for a 36-hole
total of 165. Gorski and Aarons both came up short in their bid to qualify to next
Monday’s State Finals at Santa Maria CC.
“David hurt himself in practice on Saturday and he wasn’t his usual self,” said Vaquero
coach Chuck Melendez. “He got rehab on Sunday but you could tell it was bothering
him. He didn‘t want to miss the Regional.
“Trevor was solid for the first 18 holes, then the weather got hot and he didn‘t
fare as well.”
Malcolm Kokocinsky of College of the Desert was the medalist at 4-under 140 (72-68).
WSC champion Canyons won the team competition at 2-over 722. Desert also qualified
for State by shooting 734.

SBCC had an off-day in the WSC Finals on Monday and took sixth in the 36-hole tourney
at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB.
Trevor Gorski led the Vaqueros, shooting 79 and 75 for a 10-over-par 154. He and
David Aarons (80-79--159) qualified for the Southern Cal Regional as individuals.
Kyle Rieb (80-79) also finished at 159.
Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist, shooting 7-under 65 in the first round and
75 in the second for a 140 total.
Canyons recorded identical rounds of 366 and won the last two WSC meets (Nos. 9 and
10). The Cougars (732) finished 29 shots ahead of Ventura. Glendale was third at 765.
Canyons, Glendale and Ventura all qualified for the Regional, another 36-hole event
on Monday, May 7 at Glendora CC.
Santa Barbara opened with a 401, trailing Ventura (382) by 19 shots in the battle
for the third and final Regional berth.
“We didn’t have a great start and we couldn’t overcome a 19-shot deficit,“ said coach
Chuck Melendez.
Canyons dominated the WSC season race with a 56-4 record. Glendale was 12 back at
44-16. SBCC placed fifth in the seven-team field with a 26-34 mark.

Kyle Rieb and Klas Rockberg shot season-low scores of 74 and 78 on Monday but SBCC finished

“That was our poorest outing,“ said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “We told the guys
they needed to shoot 75 or better to have a chance and we didn’t get it done.
“We missed a lot of fairways and when you do that, it‘s very difficult to score.
The good news is they‘re taking three teams to the (Southern Cal) Regional, so we
still have a chance.”
Canyons and Glendale have all but secured trips to the Regional. The third WSC qualifier
will be determined by the lowest score of the other five teams in the WSC Championships.
The WSC Championships are set for Monday at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB. The
36-hole final starts at 8 a.m. and includes WSC No. 9 and 10.
