 Ward is 26th in So Cal Regional
Freshman shoots 76-79 at Bermuda Dunes

 Dodge Ward carded an 11-over-par 155 on Monday to tie for 26th in the Southern Cal Men’s Golf Regional at Bermuda Dunes CC near Palm Springs. The freshman from San Marcos High shot 76 and 79 on a windy day in the desert.
 “The winds were pretty stiff, gale force at times,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “Some putts didn’t drop for him. He played pretty well for the conditions.”
 Ward was competing as an individual in the one-day, 36-hole event at Bermuda Dunes, a course of nearly 7,000 yards that’s one of the venues for the Bob Hope Classic on the PGA Tour. The top four teams and top six individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the State Championships on May 16 at Kings CC in Hanford.
 College of the Desert topped the 10-team field with 756 strokes (36 over par). The other qualifiers were Glendale (765), Long Beach (770) and Santiago Canyon (773).
 Andrew Perez of Desert was the medalist with rounds of 68 and 76 for an even-par 144. He beat Matt Sobczak of Hancock (73-73) by two shots.

 Ward shoots 152 to make Regional
Vaqueros miss by five shots at WSC Finals

 SBCC’s Dodge Ward shot 79 and a 1-under 73 at the longest golf course in California on Monday to earn a spot in the Southern Cal Regional but his team came up five strokes shy of qualifying.
 Ward, a freshman from San Marcos High, turned in a 4-over-par 152 in the 36-hole WSC Finals at Los Serranos CC in Chino Hills. The par-74 South Course measures 7,521 yards from the black tees. His 73 in the second round tied his season best.
 Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist at 71-74--145 and earned Player of the Year honors.
 Canyons won WSC matches 9 and 10 on Monday to finish with a 59-1 record. Glendale took second (44-16) and was the second automatic qualifier for the So Cal Regional, which will take place on May 9 at Bermuda Dunes near Palm Springs.
 Hancock shot 384-390--774 and edged SBCC by five strokes for the final regional berth. Nick Cox posted the Vaqueros' 2nd-best score (74-82--156) with Claus Ipsen recording a 157 and Kyle Rieb 158.
 “We trailed Hancock by five after the first round and couldn’t make it up,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “I’m very pleased with how we competed at the end of the year. Our team stuck with it and almost made it to the Regional.”

Boberg shoots 74; Vaqueros take fourth

 Matt Boberg tied his season best with a 2-over 74 on Monday at Oakmont Country Club, leading SBCC to fourth place in WSC men‘s golf match No. 8.
 Kyle Rieb carded a 78 and Dodge Ward and Reese Hutchins finished at 79 for the Vaqueros. Glendale, the host school, posted its first WSC win with a 377 score that was three better than Canyons. Ventura recorded a 389 and the Vaqueros were two strokes back at 391.
 Brennan Amirkhizi of Glendale was the medalist at 4-under 67.
 “We left a few strokes out there at the end,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “This was a tough course and it was nice to be competitive. We’ve got some momentum going into the WSC Championships.
 Canyons (47-1) and Glendale (34-14) are in prime position to earn two of the three conference berths to the Southern Cal Regional. The 36-hole WSC Championships (meets 9 and 10) will take place on Monday, April 25 at Los Serranos CC in Chino Hills.
 SBCC could grab a regional berth by being the top finisher at the WSC Championships outside of the two automatic qualifiers.

Rieb, Ward shoot 75 and 76

 Kyle Rieb and Dodge Ward, a pair of freshmen from San Marcos High, shot 75 and 76, respectively, for SBCC on Monday in WSC golf tournament No. 7 at Rio Bravo CC in Bakersfield.
 Matt Boberg added an 80 for the Vaqueros, who finished last in the seven-team field. Reese Hutchins carded an interesting 82 -- shooting 50 on the front nine and 4-under-par 32 on the back.
 Canyons (42-0) won its seventh straight WSC meet with 371 strokes, beating Glendale by seven. Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist at 2-under 70.
 SBCC will compete in WSC No. 8 on Monday at Oakmont CC in Glendale.

Galsterer fires season-low 76

 Mike Galsterer recorded a season-best 76 on Monday and SBCC finished sixth in WSC golf match No. 6 at par-71 Elkins Ranch in Fillmore.
 Galsterer, a freshman from Carpinteria High, was making his third appearance of the year. His previous low was 87.
 Canyons topped the seven-team field with 363 strokes (72.6 average). Glendale was second at 369 and Ventura shot 370. Andrew Garcia of Ventura and Chris Ramirez of Glendale tied for medalist honors at 1-under 70.
 Canyons (36-0) has a 14-game lead over Glendale and Hancock (22-14) with four matches remaining.
 SBCC had four players shoot 78 -- Dodge Ward, Matt Boberg, Reese Hutchins and Kyle Rieb.
 “This was a course where you can post good scores but the putting was tough for everyone,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “It was the same story we’ve had all year -- most of our guys had a couple of big numbers on a few holes.”
 The Vaqueros will compete in WSC No. 7 on Monday at Rio Bravo CC in Bakersfield.

Ward shoots 76 at WSC No. 5

 Dodge Ward fired a 76 on Monday for SBCC but the Vaqueros couldn’t find their groove in WSC No. 5 at San Dimas Golf Course.
 Canyons won with a season-low 350, beating Citrus by 17 shots in the seven-team competition. Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist at 5-under 67.
 Reese Hutchins shot 77 and Matt Boberg had a 79 for Santa Barbara, which finished last at 395.
 “This was one of the easier courses we’ve played and there were a lot of red numbers,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have many of them.”
 SBCC will travel to Fillmore on Monday to compete in WSC No. 6 at Elkins Ranch.

Ward takes third at So Cal Invitational
He shoots 77 on windy day at La Purisima

 SBCC’s Dodge Ward turned in a 77 on a windy Monday to take third place in the Southern Cal Invitational at La Purisima GC in Lompoc.
 Peter Prescott of Long Beach City was the medalist at even-par 72 in the seven-team tourney. Brett Silvernail of Ventura was second with a 76.
 Long Beach took the team title at 398, beating Ventura by 12 strokes and Citrus by 14. Matt Boberg shot 80 for SBCC, which took fifth at 431.
 “It was a blustery day, which added to the difficulty of a tough course,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “It wasn’t a super day for us but it was tough for everyone.”
 SBCC will compete in the North-South Invitational on Sunday and Monday at Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles.

Boberg shoots 78 at WSC No. 4
Vaqueros struggle on windy day

 Matt Boberg, a freshman from Sweden, shot 78 on Monday but the SBCC men’s golf team struggled in WSC No. 4 at Santa Maria CC.
 Canyons (24-0) won the seven-team match at 380, followed by Hancock (382) and Bakersfield (383). Kyle Rieb turned in an 80 for the Vaqueros, who finished last at 417 on a windy day with gusts as high as 45 mph.
 Matt Sobzcak of tournament host Hancock was the medalist at 4-under-par 68.
 “The conditions were tough but there were a lot of good scores, just not many by us,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “We’re still trying to turn the corner.”
 SBCC will compete in the Southern Cal Invitational on Monday at La Purisima GC in Lompoc, starting at 10:30 a.m.

  Vaqueros sixth at WSC No. 3
Hutchins shoots 82 on tough Saticoy course

 Reese Hutchins shot 82 on Monday and the SBCC men’s golf team placed sixth in WSC No. 3 at par-72 Saticoy CC in Somis.
 Jeff Lester turned in an 83 for the Vaqueros, who finished at 430. That was 49 strokes higher than their season-best of 381, which came one week earlier at Alisal Ranch in Solvang.
 “It was windy after 4-5 holes and Saticoy is always a difficult course,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “The course manhandled us and so did our opponents.”
 Canyons won the meet with 382 strokes, eight better than Glendale. Max Cohen was the medalist for the Cougars at 72. Canyons (18-0) has a six-game lead over Hancock (12-6) in the WSC standings.
 Kyle Rieb shot 86 for the Vaqueros, who played without Matt Boberg (illness), one of their top players.
 SBCC will compete in WSC No. 4 on Monday at Santa Maria CC.

Vaqueros fourth with season-best 381

 Kyle Rieb fired a 1-over 73 on Monday and teammate Reese Hutchins shot 74, leading the SBCC men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish in WSC No. 2 at Alisal Ranch in Solvang.
 Canyons won the seven-team meet with 362 strokes (72.4 average). Hancock prevailed in a card-off for second after tying Glendale at 375. Santa Barbara was fourth with a season-low 381.
 Rieb, a freshman from San Marcos High, placed fifth with a season-low 73. It was also a season-best 74 for Hutchins. Matt Boberg turned in a 75 and Dodge Ward 79, giving the Vaqueros four players in the 70s. Aaron West and Derek Larson, both of Canyons, were the medalists at 3-under 69.
 “It was nice to see us shoot our lowest score this year (in their home meet),” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “I was very pleased. I didn’t want our guys to get comfortable in the cellar. We took a few steps out today.”
 Canyons tops the WSC standings at 12-0, four games ahead of Hancock (8-4). The Vaqueros are sixth at 3-9.
 SBCC returns to action on Monday in WSC No. 3 at Saticoy CC in Somis.

Vaqueros are eighth at Rio Hondo
Boberg shoots 76; Long Beach wins title

 The finish wasn’t kind to SBCC on Friday at par-72 California CC where the Vaqueros placed eighth out of 10 schools in the Rio Hondo Invitational at Whittier.
 Long Beach won the men’s golf tourney with 369 strokes, beating College of the Desert by six and Glendale by nine. The Vaqueros’ total was 410.
 Matt Boberg led Santa Barbara’s all-freshman squad with a 76. Kyle Rieb and Dodge Ward posted 82s and Reese Hutchins shot 83. Peter Prescott of Long Beach was the medalist at 6-under 66.
 “We had a lot of big holes,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “Some guys had good rounds going, then it got away at the end. We‘ve got a long way to go to close the gap and be competitive. I‘m still optimistic, we just have to find our groove.”

Vaqueros struggle in WSC opener
Ward shoots 76 at Valencia CC

 SBCC struggled in the first Western State Conference men’s golf meet on Monday, shooting 407 and finishing last in the seven-team field at Valencia Country Club.
 Canyons, which hosted the event, shot 10-over-par 370 and beat runner-up Bakersfield by 11 strokes. Rufie Fessler of Bakersfield was the medalist at 4-under 68.
 Dodge Ward, a freshman from San Marcos High, led the Vaqueros with a 76 and Jeff Lester shot 79.
 “The league is definitely strong this year,“ said coach Chuck Melendez. “Obviously we need to play better by getting more consistent and correcting our mistakes.”
 The Vaqueros will play in the Rio Hondo Invitational on Friday at California CC in Whittier.

Vaqueros take fifth at Bakersfield
Boberg is fifth with 4-over 148

 SBCC freshman Matt Boberg shot his second straight 74 on Tuesday in the final round of the Bakersfield Invitational at Rio Bravo CC and finished fifth in the 60-player field. The Vaqueros shot 394 for a 781 total that earned them fifth in the 10-team, season-opening tournament.
 Canyons took a three-stroke lead into the second day of the 36-hole tourney and then used a 368 for a 738 total (73.8 average) that left the Cougars 19 strokes ahead of Ventura (757). Reedley was third at 764.
 Dodge Ward shot 78 for SBCC for a two-day total of 148. Reese Hutchins (79-79) finished at 158 and Erik Price (82-77) turned in a 159.
 “We didn’t play quite as well as we did in the first round,“ said coach Chuck Melendez. “This is a young group and we’re gaining experience.”
 The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 1 on Monday at Valencia CC.

Ward opens with 73 at Bakersfield 

 Dodge Ward fired a 1-over 73 on Monday at Seven Oaks CC, leading SBCC to fourth place after the first round of the Bakersfield Invitational.
 Ward, a freshman from San Marcos High, is in third place. Matt Boberg shot 74 and Reese Hutchins recorded a 79 for the Vaqueros, whose entire roster is comprised of freshmen.
 Canyons grabbed the lead in the 10-team field with a 10-over 370. Ventura is second at 373, followed by Reedley (375), SBCC (387) and Hancock (388). John Everson of Reedley was the medalist at 1-under 71.
 “We’re an inexperienced team and considering this was our first time out, it went pretty well,” said coach Chuck Melendez, who’s starting his 11th season. “Our goal is always to have everyone in the 70s and we came within a few strokes of that goal.”
 The final round will be played Tuesday at Rio Bravo CC, starting at 8 a.m.
