Procedure for the
Marine Diving Technology Program
Students who desire to enroll in the Marine Diving Technology program need to follow the steps below to insure their success in the program. You can either contact the department for an application and information packet at 805-965-0581, x2426, or you can download the forms from this website. You can apply to the college for admission electronically, but all other applications need to be submitted directly to the Marine Technology program. The Spring 2012 semester start date is January 23, 2012.
STEPS TO APPLY TO THE MDT PROGRAM:

Apply to the college for admission at www.sbcc.edu or submit the paper application by mail to the attention of the Admissions and Records Office. Please do not mail this application to the Marine Diving Technology Office.

Comnplete the MDT Application ASAP so that you can enroll in MDT classes. Attach your non-refundable $50.00 application fee made payable to SBCC MDT and attach a copy of your basic scuba certification card. (If you are not currently SCUBA certified, you can mail this in later . You will not be able to enroll in your classes until our department receives your MDT Application. Mail your application to: Santa Barbara City College, Marine Diving Technology Department, 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, CA 93109.

Complete and submit the physical exam in its entirety, including all lab reports, vital capacity and chest x-ray (all items 1-24 NO EXCEPTIONS) using the Commercial Diving Physician’s Examination Report form at least two weeks prior to the swim evaluation date, but no earlier than December 9, 2011 as the exam is only valid for one year.
The exam does NOT need to be mailed in with your MDT Application, but the deadline for us to receive this is January 9, 2012

The Marine Diving Technology Department will contact you within a couple of wees of receipt of your application by either phone or email.
PLEASE NOTE: The program is extremely impacted, the earlier you apply and register for your classes, the greater success you will have in becoming accepted into the program. FYI, you are NOT guaranteed a spot until you successfully pass the swim evaluation, and have enrolled in your classes, and have fully completed the application process.

NOTICE OF PHYSICAL EXAM REQUIREMENTS
– All trainees who desire to participate in Openwater
diving are required
to complete and submit the COMMERCIAL
DIVING PHYSICIAN’S EXAMINATION REPORT FORM as required
by the Association of Commercial Diving Educators for training and
subsequent qualification/certification as a Commercial Diver in
accordance with ANSI/ACDE-01-2009 Commercial Diver Training Minimum
Standard- and the Association of Diving Contractors (ADC). This documents that the participants
are free from medical contraindications to diving.
Trainees must have a qualified
licensed physician’s clearance to dive prior to beginning
training in openwater diving. The examination is valid for one
year from the date of completion and is accepted by most employers.
NOTICE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY – Santa Barbara City College and the Marine Technology Department
is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy work and training environment
and is dedicated to providing a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
Safety is of paramount importance to our program. The Marine Technology
department’s substance abuse and prevention policy incorporates
provisions for illicit drug testing. An industry standard drug screen
is a required part of the SBCC DIVING PHYSICIAN’S EXAMINATION
REPORT FORM in accordance with industry protocol.
The goals and objectives of maintaining safety in drug-free work
environments are attainable through cooperation at every level and
by explicitly and forcefully prohibiting the use, manufacture, distribution,
dispensation, and possession of illicit drugs, drug paraphernalia,
and alcohol at all our training locations and diving operations
under the auspices of the Marine Technology Department.
