Transcript Evaluations

HIT/CIM Department Transfer Credit Policy

  • The following HIT courses will only be considered for transfer credit from either a CAHIIM-Accredited HIT Program or an AHIMA-Approved Coding Program:
    HIT101, HIT102, HIT200, HIT205, HIT210, HIT220, HIT230, HIT240, HIT255, and HIT265. Not only must the program be either CAHIIM or AHIMA approved, the institution must also be regionally accredited.

  • Transfer credit will not be awarded for HIT275, HIT280, HIT284 and HIT285.

  • The following CIM courses will only be considered for transfer credit from a NCRA-Accredited CIM Program:
    CIM100, CIM125, CIM150, CIM202, CIM225, CIM250. Not only must the program be NCRA approved, the institution must also be regionally accredited.

  • Transfer credit will not be awarded for CIM275.

  • For department requirements other than those courses listed above, transfer credit will be considered from any regionally accredited college or university in the United States or from any international college or university deemed equivalent by an independent transcript evaluation service.

  • Coursework from Health IT Workforce Training programs is not accepted toward the Medical Coding, HIT, or CIM programs.

 

Instructions for Transcript Evaluation

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to receive an evaluation, you must have a Student ID Number. To get a Student ID Number, which you are assigned after you apply to SBCC at www.sbcc.edu/apply. Within one hour of applying, you will be able to look up your Student ID Number by going to pipeline.sbcc.edu, and look under the 'Registration and Student Records' section for 'My SBCC ID Number.' 

1. Complete the Student Self Evaluation form - enter into the form the courses that you have previously completed and that, in your judgment, should be accepted to meet the requirements.

2. MAIL, FAX, or SCAN/EMAIL your Self Evaluation and your transcripts to:

IMPORTANT NOTES:

    * Faxed or emailed evaluation paperwork will be accepted HOWEVER transcripts must be mailed and official in the original sealed envelope.

    * It is preferred that you submit official transcripts with your Self Evaluation.

    * Official transcripts will ultimately be required in order to graduate. 

    * If you had your official transcripts sent directly to Admissions, you may verify that they have been received by following the steps available at: www.sbcc.edu/hit/files/TranscriptStepByStep


3. When the review and approval of your forms have been completed, you will be notified on your SBCC PIPELINE e-mail account. Turn-around time varies, but can be up to 6 weeks. Questions can be emailed to Linda Uribe, Academic Counselor, at uribe@sbcc.edu.

4. Prerequisite holds associated with HIT/CIM course work will be cleared based on evaluation results. No additional paperwork is necessary for HIT/CIM course prerequisites. HOWEVER, If you have English and Math courses from another college, you may be asked to submit a Prerequisite Challenge Form in order to get those courses approved.


5. SBCC reserves the right to request further documents as needed to conduct an evaluation.


6. In some cases, evaluation of courses for subject and/or unit credit must be reviewed by the SBCC department offering a similar course.


7. For international transcript evaluation procedures, students must provide:

a) Official transcripts from prior institution.

b) Official evaluation of student's transcripts completed by an independent transcript evaluation service approved by SBCC. Here are the list of approved agencies:

Important Notes regarding international transcript evaluation reports:

1.  All agencies are private organizations.  It is the responsibility of the student to pay for the services rendered.

2.  The evaluation services listed are the only ones accepted by SBCC.

3.  You should request a detailed or comprehensive report that includes a course-by-course review with unit value, grade, and lower/under division breakdown.

4.  It is important for the student to provide complete and accurate information, following the specific directions of the respective agencies.
