Beowulf

Beowulf

Written in Old English, Beowulf can serve as a window to early Christian Anglo-Saxon culture and to the language itself. To hear the poem in Old English, is to experience a warrior culture in its glory -- even if you do not understand the words. Because Anglo-Saxon monks would have sounded out the native language phonetically through Latin, the language of the Roman Catholic Church, Old English has not entirely been lost to us. Also, Anglo-Saxon poetry follows regular patterns of 4 stressed syllables per line as well as other poetic devices associated with the oral tradition. For example, alliteration. Thus, a long dead language is brought to life again! (Taken from: The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language)
