James Van Arsdale is a Graphic Designer and Artist who has over 15 years of experience working in the Graphic Design/Web Design industry. He most recently acted as managing partner for design studio Myopia Design. Van Arsdale received an MFA from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University and a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a creator of mixed-media artworks and installations, and has exhibited widely since 1999. He is also the co-founder of community Art studio collective The Can(n)on. A life-long musician, Van Arsdale has also recorded extensively and performed music throughout the United States with a variety of groups. He currently records experimental music with Heavy Cosmic Kinetic.

Anna Lafferty

Anna Lafferty has been a professor of graphic design, typography and publication design for over 30 years at colleges in Connecticut and Santa Barbara, California. She has a BA from UCLA in Applied Arts, an MAEd from the University of Hartford College of Art and an MFA in Visual Communications from Syracuse University. She attended Art Center College of Design in Advertising Design and was a Mellon Faculty Fellow in the graphic design graduate department at Yale University for a year.

She coordinated Internships for the SBCC School of Media Arts for 10 years placing hundreds of students on career paths in graphics, media, photography and illustration. In her professional life she has focused on book design in Santa Barbara and has just received two awards for design of non-fiction books at the 2015 Indie Book Awards in New York.

Irene Ramirez has been an Adjunct Instructor at Santa Barbara City College since 2013. Prior to teaching at SBCC she was an Instructor of Graphic Design at Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts.  She has a degree in Sociology from U.C. Santa Barbara and completed the  graphic design program at Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts.  Irene is a also a freelance graphic and web designer with local, national and international clients. She is a passionate and enthusiastic educator.


Mandy Schuldt

Mandy Schuldt has been an Adjunct Instructor of Graphic Design, Publication Design and Multimedia since 2007 at Allan Hancock College and in 2014 accepted a teaching position at Santa Barbara City College. She has a BSIT from CCSU with a concentration in the Graphic Arts Industry. In teaching, she weaves practical, theoretical and personal experiences together to present a holistic approach to design.

While raising a family, Mandy worked at her profession in many capacities, including owning her own design business and co-founding a successful startup business. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to become actively involved as an organizer for several StartUp Weekend events as well as  a past mentor for the SBCC Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship. Mandy continues to work as a freelance designer.

Victoria Torf, B.A., M.A., is an award-winning graphic designer, but it is her thirty years of practical experience as founder and creative director of a Southern California design studio that is most valuable to her students. Authenticity and clarity of message is the cornerstone to her design approach. She educates from this perspective and brings her real-world experiences to the classroom so that students develop exceptional skills and confidence in the swiftly changing world of computer graphics.

With a renowned design style – combining fine art, mixed media and a clean, graphic attitude — she brings creative distinction to a wide range of local, national and international clients. She is a graduate of UCLA with a degree in Fine Arts and holds a Masters Degree in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Victoria Torf’s fine artwork is shown in local museums, art galleries and corporate venues, and has received numerous print, marketing, and design awards — earning recognition for her clients.
