Saturday, Sept. 4-- Hancock at SBCC, 6 p.m. Hancock 51, SBCC 6 Record: 0-1
Hancock runs past SBCC
Ryan Anglin ran for 210 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night and Hancock piled
up 484 yards on the ground en route to a 51-6 football victory over SBCC.
It was the first game on the new synthetic turf at La Playa Stadium.
Martel Crockett got loose for a 72-yard TD run on the second play of the game and
Anglin sprinted 87 yards the next time the Bulldogs touched the ball for an early
13-0 lead. Anglin went for 190 yards and three scores in the first half as the visitors
from Santa Maria built a 34-6 lead.
Hancock, ranked 13thin Southern California, won the 50thmeeting with SBCC to improve its series lead to 28-21-1. The Bulldogs finished with
653 total yards while the Vaqueros had 205.
Crockett gained 127 yards on 12 rushing attempts on a night when 16 Hancock players
had at least one carry.
“Hancock is a good football team,“ said SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos. “They’re physical
and powerful and you better tackle them. We didn’t tackle well, that’s obvious.
“You can’t turn the ball over and you can’t drop the ball in the end zone.”
Alonzo Winn rushed 14 times for 84 yards in his debut for the Vaqueros, who turned
the ball over three times. Quarterback John Uribe completed 12-of-29 passes for 107
yards and an interception.
The Vaqueros’ best chance for a touchdown came on their second series. They drove
55 yards and had first-and-goal at the 6 after Alonzo ripped off a 16-yard run. A
pass was dropped in the end zone, however, and Chaz Dalton booted a 22-yard field
goal to make it 13-3.
Anglin had scoring runs of 6 and 34 yards in the second quarter as Hancock stretched
the lead to 27-3 before Dalton booted a 38-yard FG with 3:05 to go in the first half.
Lavance Thompson caught eight passes for 75 yards for the Vaqueros. Manny Hernandez
led the defense with 12 tackles, including four solo.
“Nobody gave up, our guys kept playing hard,” said Moropoulos. “That’s our motto
for the next couple of weeks -- try to get better and build on the positives.
“Alonzo Winn is our third-team running back and he had an outstanding night.”
Saturday, Sept. 11-- SBCC at Antelope Valley, 6 p.m. SBCC 30, Antelope Valley 14 Record: 1-1
Uribe sparks 30-14 Vaquero win
Defense holds AVC to 40 yards rushing
Sophomore quarterback John Uribe looked sharp on Saturday night and the defense was
stellar for three quarters as SBCC topped Antelope Valley 30-14 in a nonconference
game at Marauder Stadium in Lancaster.
The victory was the first of the year for the Vaqueros (1-1), who led 20-0 at the
half and stretched it to 27-0 when Uribe hit Art Gonzalez with a 40-yard scoring strike
on the fourth play of the fourth quarter.
The Marauders (0-2) made the final score closer by driving for two fourth-quarter
touchdowns in less than five minutes. They pulled within 30-14 at the 5:47 mark and
tried an onside kick that SBCC’s Bret Urness recovered at the AVC 40.
Gonzalez, a former Bishop Diego High star, caught nine passes for 177 yards and a
touchdown. Uribe, who’s been playing football with Gonzalez since they were kids,
completed 19 of 29 passes for 246 yards and two scores.
“We came out firing tonight and we were confident,” said Gonzalez. “Last week, we
weren’t so confident (in a 51-6 loss to Hancock). We were having fun out there tonight.
“I’ve been playing with John since we were about 5 years old.”
Alonzo Winn led a solid rushing attack for SBCC with 112 yards on 16 tries for a
7-yard average. The visitors drove 56 yards in six plays on their first possession,
capped by Winn’s 1-yard yard leap for the touchdown. He had 45 yards in the drive,
including a 35-yard burst on a sweep to the right.
Santa Barbara scored again on its second possession with Chaz Dalton’s 22-yard field
goal capping a 13-play, 73-yard march.
SBCC piled up 458 yards while holding the Marauders to 286. AVC managed just 40 rushing
yards on 27 attempts and lost two fumbles. The Vaqueros didn’t have a turnover.
“I’m proud of the guys, especially the defense,” said fourth-year coach Craig Moropoulos.
“They rose up against a team that throws the ball real well. We got some guys back
and we did a great job of bouncing back from a tough game last week.”
Linebacker Sam Shipley led the defense with 12 tackles, including five solo, and
a fumble recovery. Manny Hernandez had 12 tackles while Cam Humphrey had eight tackles,
a sack and recovered an onside kick in the fourth quarter.
The Vaqueros looked like they would lead 13-0 at halftime after Dalton booted a 34-yard
field goal with 45 seconds left. Dalton’s kickoff was a grounder and linebacker Deron
Gray fumbled shortly after fielding it at the 25.
Shipley picked the ball up at the 17 and returned it to the 9-yard line. Two plays
later, Uribe faked a handoff and hit a wide-open tight end Chad Toocheck near the
back of the end zone for a 4-yard TD.
That stretched the lead to 20-0 with 20.8 seconds to go in the second quarter.
Santa Barbara outrushed AVC 133 yards to 17 in the first half and finished with 212
yards on the ground. Michael Douglas added 68 rushing yards thanks to holes created
by tackles Chris Anderson and Sean Hampshire, guards Travis Lutz and Kevin Ruiz and
center Keith Serne.
Uribe, who threw a record 44 touchdowns for Santa Barbara High in 2008, hooked up
with Gonzalez for completions of 29 and 53 yards in the first half when he was 10-15
for 142 yards.
“The O-line stepped it up, the running backs stepped it up and the receivers got
open and caught the ball,” said Uribe. “When we put our entire offense together, we
can really do some damage.”
Saturday, Sept. 18-- Ventura at SBCC, 6 p.m. Ventura 45, SBCC 34 Record: 1-2
Vaquero rally falls short, 45-34
Uribe accounts for five TDs in second half
John Uribe threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns in the second half on Saturday
night but SBCC still came up short in a 45-34 football loss to Ventura.
The Vaqueros (1-2) trailed 21-0 at the half and fell behind 35-0 with 10:50 to go
in the third period after fumbling away a punt at the 9 and a kickoff at the 2. The
Pirates (2-1) scored two touchdowns in 16 seconds to stretch the lead to 35 points
on a foggy night in La Playa Stadium.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” said SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos. “That’s the kind
of game that does a lot for us, even though we lost. Our guys kept playing and made
some things happen.”
Ventura quarterback Antavius Sims ran for 131 yards and three touchdowns and passed
for 208 yards and a score. The Pirates narrowly won the yardage battle 420-404.
Uribe, a former Santa Barbara High star, had his best game as a Vaquero, completing
26-of-37 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns while running for 41 yards and a
3-yard TD that pulled the home team within 45-21 midway through the final period.
Uribe amassed five TDs (4 passing, 1 rushing) in the final 23 minutes and 25 seconds.
He completed 18-25 passes in the second half for 267 yards and finished with 358 total
yards.
“We came out with a lot of urgency in the second half,” said Uribe. “We have to come
out like at the beginning. Everybody showed heart. This is a loss in the record book
but it’s a win in everybody’s heart.
“We stuck together in the second half and made things happen.”
Chad Toocheck had nine catches for 118 yards and a TD. The Vaqueros scored three
TDs in the final 7:32, capped by a 17-yard Uribe-to-Toocheck connection that cut the
deficit to 11 with 24 seconds left. SBCC went for a 2-point conversion but Michael
Douglas slipped on a run to the left.
Chris Kordakis had 103 receiving yards on six grabs and Art Gonzalez caught five
balls for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
There were 30 penalties in the nonconference game, including 21 by Ventura for a
whopping 189 yards.
The Vaqueros lost three fumbles and Uribe threw a key interception with 1:07 left
in the second quarter. Starting from the SBCC 45, Sims completed three straight passes
with the last one going for a 20-yard TD to Dezerek Reed that boosted the Pirate lead
to 21-0 at halftime.
“There are no morale victories but I am proud of the way we hung in there and kept
fighting back,” said Moropoulos.
After falling behind 35-0, the Vaqueros outscored Ventura 34-10 the rest of the way.
Sam Shipley led the Santa Barbara defense with 18 tackles (6 solo), three for losses
and two quarterback hurries. Manny Hernandez had 10 tackles and punted six times for
a 42.5-yard average.
“We were down 35-0 and we fought to the end,” Moropoulos added. “All of a sudden,
the defense started rising up and made some big plays.”
Ventura rushed for 212 yards and five TDs while holding the Vaqueros to 87 yards
on the ground.
“We have to run the ball because that takes the pressure off of John,” said Moropoulos.
“They were very physical up front.”
SBCC plays its final nonconference game on Saturday at Moorpark. The Raiders beat
Hancock 22-21 on Saturday on a 27-yard field goal with three seconds to play.
Saturday, Sept. 25-- SBCC at Moorpark, 6 p.m. Moorpark 35, SBCC 29 Record: 1-3
Vaqueros edged by Moorpark 35-29
Uribe passes for 257 yards; Douglas rushes for 133
SBCC piled up 458 yards of offense on Saturday night but couldn’t overcome three fumbles
in the third quarter of a 35-29 loss at Moorpark.
The Vaqueros (1-3) took a 22-21 halftime lead after quarterback John Uribe connected
with Chris Kordakis on a 71-yard TD pass and James Nelson blocked a punt out of the
end zone for a safety.
Uribe completed 19-of-26 passes for 257 yards and a score while Michael Douglas gained
133 yards on 17 rushes, including a 50-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. Kordakis,
a sophomore from El Dorado, Calif., caught six balls for 171 yards and a TD.
Moorpark (2-2) regained the lead 28-22 by taking the second-half kickoff and driving
62 yards in seven plays, capped by a 6-yard pass from QB Dalton Botts to Chris Gant.
SBCC lost two fumbles on the ensuing kickoff and four plays later on a sack. Moorpark
took over on the 36 and 38-yard lines but each time, SBCC foiled a fourth-down gamble
with Matt Arve breaking up a pass and then Ryan Miller and Alonzo Lefridge tackling
a receiver one yard shy of the first-down marker.
Douglas fumbled on the next play and the Raiders took advantage with a 39-yard scoring
strike from Botts to Gant. That gave the home team a 35-22 lead with 6:04 to go in
the third quarter.
With the game tied at 7, SBCC got a 37-yard kickoff return from Fred Maldonado and
set up shop at the Moorpark 48. Uribe hit Kordakis for 27 yards on a third-and-9 from
the 33 but Douglas fumbled at the 1 and a Raider defender knocked the ball out of
the end zone for a touchback.
Santa Barbara fumbled five times and lost four.
“We moved the ball consistently all night, then we fumble at the 1-yard line and
we just can’t do that,” said SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos. “We’re our own worst enemy.
“We can’t keep putting our defense in situations where we give the ball right back
to them. That kills you.";;;;;;;
Arve, a defensive back from Buena High, opened the game with a 56-yard kick return
for the Vaqueros. He also had a 41-yard runback and intercepted a long pass by Zach
Shultis to end the first half.
Linebacker Sam Shipley, who became a father on Tuesday when his wife Kaisey delivered
a 7½-pound boy (Bentley Randolph), had 14 tackles, including seven solo. He stopped
Derek Morris for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-2 from the 36 with 2:35 to go in the
third.
The Vaqueros then marched 62 yards in 12 plays, capped by Alonzo Winn’s 1-yard plunge
on the fifth play of the final quarter. Ten of the plays were runs. Uribe kept the
drive alive with a 3-yard sneak on fourth-and-2 from the Raider 43.
The TD pulled SBCC within six (35-29) with 12:43 to play. Santa Barbara got to the
Raider 21 on its last drive but a penalty, a 9-yard sack and two incompletes ended
the threat.
SBCC has lost five fumbles in the last two third quarters. The Vaqueros have been
outscored 45-14 in the third quarter this year.
“Ball security is something you’ve got to emphasize,” said Moropoulos. “We have to
do a better job of taking care of it. It’s not easy. It’s not a magical thing where
you can just snap your fingers and change a player.
“We have to sharpen up all three phases. We‘ve got to take care of some minor things
that turn into major things. And we have to take care of the football.”
The Vaqueros will open the American Pacific Conference season on Saturday with a
6 p.m. home date against L.A. Southwest.
Saturday, Oct. 2 (APC opener) -- L.A. Southwest at SBCC, 6 p.m. SBCC 26, L.A. Southwest 21 Records: 2-3, 1-0
Vaqueros rally for dramatic victory
Douglas’ second TD secures 26-21 win
Things weren’t looking very good for SBCC with 1:25 to go in Saturday’s American
Pacific Conference football opener at La Playa Stadium. The Vaqueros were trailing
L.A. Southwest 21-19 and John Uribe’s pass had just been tipped and intercepted, then
returned to the Vaqueros’ 10-yard line.
Twenty-four seconds later, SBCC running back Michael Douglas danced into the end
zone for a 16-yard TD that capped an amazing comeback and secured a 26-21 victory.
“In 26 years, I’ve never been involved in anything like that,” said Santa Barbara
coach Craig Moropoulos. “I’ve been involved in marching down the field and kicking
winning field goals, marching down the field and scoring a touchdown and marching
down the field and failing.
“But never anything like that. I’m just glad I called timeout. Because if I don’t
do that, they would have kneeled down again and it was over.”
After Cougar QB Shashaun Alexander knelt down on first down at the 10, SBCC called
timeout with 1:22 to play. Then, the Cougars lined up for a regular play but Alexander fumbled the snap. Vaquero linebacker Manny Hernandez pounced on the ball
at his own 12.
Hernandez, a former San Marcos High star, had a season-best 19 tackles, including
seven solo and 3.5 for loss. Sam Shipley, another ex-Royal who leads the state in
tackles, finished with 16.
“In our previous games, we’ve had moments of greatness,” said Shipley. “Tonight when
it seemed like it couldn’t get any worse, we found a way to win.
“The greatest feeling for me was after we threw that last interception and they were
getting ready to kneel on the ball, I can remember gathering the defense and you could
see the fire in everyone’s eyes.
“No one thought it was over. We knew we were going to make a play.”
On first down, Uribe hit Art Gonzalez in stride up the right sideline and he sprinted
72 yards to the Southwest 16. On the next play, Douglas took a pitch to the left side
and weaved through the defense for the decisive 16-yard score.
Just like that, the Vaqueros (2-3, 1-0) covered 88 yards in 19 seconds to pull out
an unlikely victory.
SBCC trailed 7-6 at the half and 21-14 early in the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros
got within two (21-19) on a 31-yard field goal by Shane Rogers and a Cougar snap that
sailed over the punter’s head for a safety with three minutes left.
Douglas gained 123 yards on 24 rushes with two TDs. The Vaqueros enjoyed their best
offensive night of the year with 516 yards.
And Santa Barbara managed to win despite committing six turnovers, including four
interceptions. One of those came on a halfback option pass that was picked off near
the goal line with 6:23 to play.
Uribe completed 21-of-33 passes for a career-high 330 yards. He had three interceptions,
but two of those were tipped. Gonzalez caught seven passes for 140 yards and Chad
Toocheck hauled in seven for 119 yards.
Ezekiel Graham led the Cougars (2-3, 0-1) with 184 yards and two TDs on 21 rushing
attempts.
The Vaqueros have made 14 turnovers in the last three games.
“We’ve got to find a way to stop making dumb mistakes in the special teams,” said
Moropoulos, whose club fumbled away two first-quarter kickoffs. “We have to find a
way to get better there.
“Our defense did a great job tonight. We talked about finding a way to win the game
and they did that.”
Saturday, Oct. 9-- SBCC at Santa Monica, 6 p.m. SBCC 35, Santa Monica 28 Records: 3-3, 2-0 APC
Uribe ties school mark with 5 TD passes
Gonzalez catches 3 TDs in 35-28 win at Santa Monica
John Uribe tied a school record with five touchdown tosses Saturday night and SBCC
topped Santa Monica 35-28 for its second straight APC victory.
The Vaqueros (3-3, 2-0) are tied for first with L.A. Pierce (4-2, 2-0), their next
opponent on Saturday, Oct. 16, at La Playa Stadium. Pierce outlasted Glendale 42-40
on Saturday.
Uribe completed 16-of-27 passes for 292 yards and five touchdowns in the game at
Santa Monica. He averaged 18.2 yards on his completions. Gonzalez, who’s been catching
passes from Uribe for more than a decade, had five receptions for 140 yards and three
TDs, measuring 29, 58 and 45 yards.
Chad Toocheck added six catches for 89 yards and a TD.
“They like to play a lot of Cover Zero with no safety in the back and we took advantage
of that with play-action,” noted Uribe, who tied Nick Acciani’s 2006 record. “Our
running backs ran hard, the offensive line did a great job and our receivers got open.
When they’re open, I just throw the ball and they make the plays
“The big thing is we’re 2-0 in conference and we’ve got to keep it rolling.”
Chris Hoose recovered a Corsair fumble on the first play of the game and Uribe promptly
hit Gonzalez with a 29-yard touchdown for a quick 7-0 lead. Santa Monica (2-3, 0-1)
answered with a 60-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to tie the game.
On the next possession, Uribe directed a 62-yard march in seven plays, culminating
in a 22-yard scoring pass to Toocheck, who made a diving catch near the right sideline.
The Vaqueros got the ball back when Hoose stopped Benjamin Irwin-Crayton for a 3-yard
loss on fourth-and-1 at the SBCC 37. On second down, Uribe faked a handoff and hit
a wide-open Gonzalez for a 58-yard TD with 9:32 left in the second quarter.
Chaz Dalton’s third PAT kick gave the visitors a 21-7 halftime lead.
Michael Douglas reached 100 yards in rushing for the third straight game. He had
exactly 100 yards on 17 carries for a 5.9 average.
“They pretty much sold-out to stop the run,” said coach Craig Moropoulos. “We were
ready for it and went over the top several times. John threw the ball very well and
Art and Chad made some great catches.
“Plus our defense stepped up and played well again.”
Freshman linebacker Manny Hernandez had another huge game with 16 tackles, including
five solo and 2.5 for 14 yards in losses. The former San Marcos High star also averaged
nearly 45 yards on five punts.
The Vaqueros lost two key defensive players in the first quarter. Linebacker Sam
Shipley, who leads the state in tackles, went down with a hamstring pull and defensive
end David Izebere injured his knee. Marcus Griffin filled in for Shipley and finished
with 10 tackles and a sack.
Uribe hit Chris Kordakis with a 20-yard scoring strike at the 9:18 mark of the third
quarter. The Corsairs pulled within six, 27-21, on an 80-yard drive, capped by Torrence
Whalum’s 6-yard run.
SBCC needed just three plays to cover 67 yards. Juston Leverette ran 17 yards on
a reverse and Uribe then connected with Gonzalez on a 45-yard post pattern for the
TD. Gonzalez scored a 2-point PAT on an end-around and the Vaqueros led 35-21 with
3:15 to go in the third.
The Corsairs scored their final TD on a 3-yard pass that capped a 15-play, 70-yard
march with 1:27 to play.
Santa Barbara won the turnover battle 4-1, recovering two fumbles and getting interceptions
from Enrique Thomas and Matthew Arve.
“We made some big plays when we had to,” said defensive coordinator Jeff Santarosa.
“We just have to eliminate the (opponents’) big plays, that’s what’s getting us right
now.”
Saturday, Oct. 16-- L.A. Pierce at SBCC, 6 p.m. Pierce 35, SBCC 30 Records: 3-4, 2-1 APC
Pierce edges Vaqueros 35-30
Uribe throws for three TDs in first APC loss
SBCC brought one of Southern California’s most effective red-zone offenses into Saturday’s
first-place showdown with L.A. Pierce.
The Vaqueros came in at 81-percent efficiency but they couldn’t convert on two chances
in the fourth quarter of a 35-30 American Pacific Conference loss to the Brahmas (5-2,
3-0).
Santa Barbara (3-4, 2-1) drove 50 yards and had a first-and-goal from the 7 with
2:05 to play. The Vaqueros lost three yards on two runs, Alonzo Winn slipped on a
third-down pass that might have been a touchdown and Chris Kordakis couldn’t make
a sliding grab in the end zone on fourth down.
“Our strength has been our ability to score in the red zone and we didn’t do that
tonight,” said coach Craig Moropoulos, whose team was 3-of-6 inside the 20-yard line.
“We scored 30 points but we should have scored a lot more. But that’s life, that’s
the way this game is.”
John Uribe completed 20-of-34 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns. Chad Toocheck
had eight receptions for 152 yards and two scores. Art Gonzalez, SBCC’s top receiver,
was hobbled by a knee injury and had just three catches for 27 yards.
The stats were nearly identical in the battle between the top two offenses in the
APC. SBCC won the first-down battle 24-22 and Pierce prevailed in total yards, 478-453.
The Vaqueros jumped ahead 16-0 in the first quarter on an 18-yard run by Winn, a
22-yard field goal by Shane Rogers and a brilliant leaping TD catch by Michael Douglas
on a 25-yard pass from Uribe. The Vaqueros went for a 2-point conversion after the
first touchdown with their line spread wide to the left and right but the run failed.
The visitors got within 16-14 but the Vaqueros took a 23-14 halftime lead with a
seven-play, 64-yard march. Uribe and Toocheck connected on a 43-yard pass on the first
play of the drive and the pair combined for a 1-yard TD toss on a play-action fake
on fourth-and-goal with 2:51 to go.
The Brahmas, who lead the series 15-13, took the lead after scoring drives of 53
and 80 yards in the third quarter. Exavier Johnson’s 3-yard TD pass to Nate Ingram
made it 28-23.
SBCC got to the Pierce 13-yard line on its next possession but Douglas was stopped
on fourth-and-1. Douglas recorded his fourth straight 100-yard game with 104 yards
on 21 attempts.
Manny Hernandez led the Vaquero defense with 17 tackles (7 solo) and two forced fumbles.
The Vaqueros played without star linebacker Sam Shipley and defensive end David Izebere,
who were injured.
After falling behind, SBCC forced a punt but Matthew Arve fumbled the return and
Pierce recovered at the Vaquero 33. On first down, Clinton Granger hit Ingram up the
right sideline for a 33-yard TD that stretched the margin to 35-23 with 11:33 to go.
Granger, who shared time at QB with Johnson, completed 10-13 passes for 222 yards
and three TDs.
Cornerback Enrique Thomas made his third interception of the year on the Brahmas’
fourth play and Arve foiled a second-quarter Pierce drive with his fourth interception
at his own 8.
SBCC’s defense forced Pierce into three-and-outs on its last three possessions.
With 7:07 to play, Uribe heaved a long pass from his own 46. The ball bounced off
a defender at the 20 and into the hands of Toocheck, who went into the end zone to
complete the 54-yard play and pull the Vaqueros within five, 35-30.
Santa Barbara forced another punt and got the ball on the Pierce 41 with 59 seconds
left. Uribe threw a bomb for Toocheck near the goal line but he couldn’t come up with
it. A sack on fourth down ended the Vaqueros’ comeback bid.
“It’s a tough game and there’s a lot of injuries,” Moropoulos concluded. “We played
well, we played hard and we were right there.
“We have three more games to play and we’ll see what happens. Pierce could still
get beat.”
Saturday, Oct. 23-- SBCC at L.A. Valley, Valley Glen, 6 p.m. L.A. Valley 30, SBCC 26 Records: 3-5, 2-2 APC
Injury-plagued Vaqueros fall at Valley
Uribe passes for 221 yards, 2 TDs in 30-24 loss
John Uribe passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night but it wasn’t enough
for SBCC, which dropped a 30-24 APC decision at L.A. Valley.
The Vaqueros (3-5, 2-2) have suffered a rash of injuries lately and only had four
defensive linemen available. Art Gonzalez, the second-leading receiver (35 catches,
595 yards, 6 TDs) is out for the year with a torn ACL.
“We’ve had five knee injuries and we lost Art,” said coach Craig Moropoulos. “It’s
unfortunate but it’s part of the game, just like officials and turnovers. You just
hope they don’t get in the way of the game but turnovers hurt us again.";;;;;;;
Valley (5-2, 3-0) struck first with a 73-yard drive on its first possession. Dan
Owen hit Donte Gilmer for an 18-yard score and a 7-0 lead.
SBCC responded with a 63-yard march in just five plays, capped by a 49-yard TD connection
from Uribe to Anthony Pullman. It was Pullman’s first catch of the season.
Michael Douglas lost a fumble at his own 18 early in the second quarter and the Monarchs
used five running plays to get it in the end zone and extend their lead to 17-7. Douglas,
who was seeking his fifth straight 100-yard game, was held to 33 yards on four carries.
SBCC piled up 394 yards against the top defense in the conference and Valley had
414.
“The loss is disappointing but by the same token, I was very proud of our guys and
how hard they played,” said Moropoulos. “They never gave up. We’ve been in every game
except the first one.”
Uribe completed 15-of-26 with two TDs and an interception. The 221 yards pushed him
over the 2,000-mark for the season with 2,054.
Alonzo Winn rushed 17 times for 78 yards and a TD while Chad Toocheck caught seven
passes for 114 yards.
Uribe was intercepted in the end zone on a fourth-and goal from the 2 with eight
minutes to go in the third quarter. Two plays later, Alonzo Lefridge picked off an
Owen pass at the Valley 16. Uribe hit Chris Kordakis for a 13-yard gain on second
down and Winn punched it from the 2 to cut the deficit to 17-14.
SBCC got to the Valley 11 on its next possession before settling for a 28-yard field
goal by Chaz Dalton that tied the game at 17.
The Monarchs got a 35-yard kickoff return, then covered 55 yards in five plays and
regained the lead, 24-17, on a 33-yard pass from Owen to Jon Hilliger.
Vaquero punter Manny Hernandez backed up Valley at its own 5 with a 46-yard punt.
But the Monarchs put together a game-clinching drive, covering 95 yards in 17 plays
and just over eight minutes to take a 30-17 lead.
All but two of the plays were runs and Germi Morrison scored his second TD on a 33-yard
scamper with 2:06 to play.
The Vaqueros went 66 yards in eight plays, capped by a 10-yard Uribe to Toocheck
aerial that cut the deficit to six with 13 seconds left.
Santa Barbara was 3-6 in red-zone conversions while Valley was 4-4.
Hernandez, the leading tackler in the state, had 13 tackles, including six solo.
Sam Shipley, who returned after missing most of the last two games with an injury,
had 10 tackles.
“It’s good to have Sam back but we’re struggling with depth right now,” said Moropoulos.
“The people that we have are stepping up and playing hard.”

Uribe throws three TDs in 27-21 win
Two key Vaqueros injured at Glendale
After building a 27-7 halftime lead on Saturday night, SBCC lost a pair of key offensive
players and held on for a 27-21 victory at Glendale.
Quarterback John Uribe completed 10-of-13 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns
in the first half. He finished with 236 yards on 14-22 passing for the Vaqueros (4-5,
3-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak.
SBCC is third in the American Pacific Conference behind L.A. Valley (4-0) and L.A.
Pierce (3-1). The Vaqueros have one game left while the others have two.
It was the first “Battle of the Vaqueros” in eight years (both teams use the nickname)
and SBCC evened the series at 20-20.
“We lost Alonzo Winn and Chad Toocheck, two big parts of our offense,“ said fourth-year
coach Craig Moropoulos. “That was tough. We’re down to low levels already and losing
those guys hurt because both had big first halves.”
Winn carried 14 times for 103 yards and scored his team’s third TD on a 38-yard run
with 5:16 to go in the half. He suffered a high ankle sprain in the last minute of
the second quarter and never returned.
Toocheck caught six passes for 125 yards and two TD s in the first half. The 6-3
freshman finished with eight catches for 157 yards and two TD s. He separated his
right shoulder after a 13-yard grab with 9:10 to play in the third quarter. No other
SBCC receiver had more than one catch.
Uribe directed a 55-yard march on the opening drive, capped by a 3-yard toss to Toocheck.
On its third possession, SBCC went 90 yards in 3:16 with Uribe finding Anthony Fullman
on a 34-yard TD strike for a 14-0 lead. Fullman has two receptions this year and both
were TDs in the last two games.
Winn scampered 38 yards after a fake pass for his sixth rushing TD of the year at
the 5:16 mark, boosting the lead to 21-7. Collin Olsson recovered a fumble at his
own 40 and Uribe hit Toocheck for a 30-yard gain on first down.
Five plays later, it was Uribe-to-Toocheck again for an 18-yard score and a 27-7
halftime advantage. Uribe has 20 TDs this year and only seven interceptions.
After getting outgained 279-110 in first-half yardage, Glendale dominated the second
half, 300 yards to 55.
Santa Barbara lost one of its top receivers, Art Gonzalez, to a knee injury two weeks
ago and this year’s leading rusher, Michael Douglas, didn’t suit up Saturday due to
a concussion.
“When you lose guys like that and the ones we lost tonight, it makes things tough,”
said Moropoulos. “Obviously the win was big but the biggest thing was no turnovers.
You can throw out their record. Glendale is a big, physical team that fights and scraps
and plays hard.”
Glendale (0-8, 0-4) has lost its last four games by a total of 16 points.
Manny Hernandez, the state leader in tackles, added 14 more (5 solo), including two
for losses. Cam Humphrey had a season-high 13 tackles and Sam Shipley added 10. Olsson
and Chris Hoose had fumble recoveries.
James Damour, who was filling in for starting cornerback Enrique Thomas (migraine
headaches), had eight tackles in his first start and broke up a long fourth-down pass
in the end zone on Glendale’s second-to-last possession.
Glendale got the ball back at its own 22 with 1:38 to play and moved it to the SBCC
43 before Matt Arve intercepted a Steven Batista pass at the 31 and returned it to
the 39, sealing the win. It was the fifth interception for Arve, who grabbed the ball
after teammate Cam Humphrey tipped it in the air.
Hernandez punted seven times for a 39.4 average, including a season-best 62-yard
boomer just before halftime.

Vaqueros fall short in finale, 27-21
West L.A.survives a bizarre ending
The scene was familiar for SBCC in Saturday night’s football finale at La Playa Stadium:
A late drive comes up short, leading to a narrow defeat.
West L.A. scored 10 points in a 78-second span of the fourth quarter and then survived
a strange ending for a 27-21 APC victory. There were five penalties (four on the visitors)
and three sacks in the final 30 seconds as SBCC was trying to get the go-ahead touchdown.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” said coach Craig Moropoulos. “I’m not happy with losing
but I’m so proud of our guys. Nine out of 10 games were close right to the end and
we fought in every one.”
SBCC’s last four losses came by six points or less. The Vaqueros (4-6, 3-3) hurt
their own cause with a season-high 15 penalties for 143 yards.
Quarterback John Uribe completed 20-of-28 passes for 264 yards and three TDs. All
three of his scoring tosses came in the firsts half, including two to Michael Douglas.
The last TD of the half, a 15-yarder to Douglas with 3:45 to play, gave the Vaqueros
their first lead at 21-17.
Uribe is No. 1 on the Southern Cal chart for TD passes with 23.
Santa Barbara (4-6, 3-3) gave up a 16-yard TD pass with 8:15 to go, then fumbled
the ensuing kickoff. The Wildcats (5-4, 3-2) took over on the 4-yard line but the
defense held them to a 39-yard field goal.
SBCC took over on its own 28 with 3:21 to play. Uribe, one of 21 sophomores playing
their final game, guided his team down the field with a 19-yard run and passes of
15 and 18 yards.
A fourth-and-3 pass went incomplete at the Vaquero 35 but West L.A. was called for
offsides and unsportsmanlike conduct. Seconds later, Uribe hit Chad Toocheck for a
15-yard gain to the Wildcat 30.
Toocheck, the No. 2 receiver in Southern Cal, played with a shoulder separations
and still caught eight passes for 127 yards and a TD.
SBCC was called for holding and following two sacks, the Vaqueros had fourth-and-18
on the 38 with 7.8 seconds to go. Uribe heaved a pass into the end zone and Toocheck
made a spectacular catch while falling backwards over the end line.
The officials didn’t signal touchdown, however. Instead, they huddled and then announced
the penalty was offensive pass interference. SBCC picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty, moving the ball back to its own 32.
With no time on the clock, the Vaqueros had one last play and Uribe’s pass went incomplete.
They got another chance after a roughing the passer call but Veylin Stedham sacked
Uribe on fourth down.
Douglas finished with 98 yards on 21 carries, just missing his fifth 100-yard game
of the season.
“I’m frustrated because we were right there in so many games but we couldn’t find
a way to get it done,” said Moropoulos, whose team was beset by injuries in the last
three weeks. “By the same token, I’m extremely proud and encouraged by this program
and where we’re going.”
