Women claim Bakersfield title
Instebo is second; Roberts leads men to 2nd place
Cecilia Instebo took second and Emily Bernath placed fifth on Friday as the SBCC captured
the Bakersfield Invitational in 94-degree heat.
Instebo ran 19:49 on the 5K course, finishing 15 seconds behind the winner, Emma Ramirez of Antelope Valley. Bernath was clocked in 20:07. Nicole Bartlett took 11th for the Vaqueros, Sara Smith was 16th and Dean Roell 17th in the 55-woman field.
“We won the last time we were here in 2009, so this feels great,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “This is the first time Sara and Dean ran for us and they really helped.”
The Vaqueros topped the seven-team field with 51 points. Southwestern was second at 72 and Antelope Valley third with 76.
In the men’s 4-mile race, the Vaqueros placed second with 52 points, just three behind Southwestern in the five-team field. Freshman Ian Roberts was second in 21:53 and teammate Omar Padilla took third in 22:19.
Marcial Ordaz, a sophomore from Santa Ynez High, was ninth in 23:08. Jamison Leighton was 15th in the 46-man field.
“We used a more aggressive strategy and it paid off up front,” said Fickerson.
The Vaqueros will run in the WSC Preview on Oct. 5 at Kenneth Hahn Park in Los Angeles.

Instebo takes 18th in So Cal Preview
Roberts leads men in season opener
Sophomore Cecilia Instebo placed 18th in a field of 200 women’s runners on Saturday as SBCC opened the cross country season
in the Southern Cal Preview Meet at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
With temperatures in the 90s, Instebo clocked 19:49 on the 5K course. Nicole Bartlett was 47th in 21:00 and Emily Bernath took 53rd in 21:11. Grace Zamudio of Glendale was the winner in 18:38.
SBCC didn’t field a complete team and didn’t post a score.
"Cecilia continued where she left off last season, showing she is among the top runners in the state,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “This is an excellent start for her.
"The women ran a smart race given the conditions and the challenging course. They went out controlled and raced with patience and poise. While it may not look good on paper, we accomplished our goals, which were to race the course well and get a good race experience for our season opener."
Ian Roberts, a freshman from Ventura High, finished 50th in the 4-mile men’s race in 22:21, leading the Vaqueros to 18th in a field of 26 schools.
"Ian showed confidence beyond his years in his first college race,” Fickerson noted. “The men grouped very well and raced tough in the second half of the race. We have some work ahead of us to get to where we need to, but this race shows me that we are capable of a strong finish in November.
"I'm very proud of how both teams handled the very challenging conditions.”
The Vaqueros will compete in the Bakersfield Invitational on Friday, Sept. 28.
