Vaqueros improve in 2010
Schaeffer takes 13th in state with season-best time
Improvement was the word for the SBCC cross country team.
Sophomore Erika Schaeffer averaged 90 seconds faster than her times from a year ago and placed 13th in the state in a season-best
18:46 on a muddy 5K course at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Schaeffer, who finished second in the WSC Championships, and Ayala Granados were both first-team All-WSC. Sarah O’Connor,
a second-team choice, was 111th at state, also in a season-best 20:46.
The women took sixth in the WSC Finals and earned their second straight trip to the Southern Cal Regional.
On the men’s side, Garrett Edwards shaved a minute off his time average from 2009 and qualified for the state meet, where
he placed 96th in a field of 217. He was first-team All-WSC. Luis Garnica and Marcial Ordaz had solid freshmen campaigns with
Garnica missing a state berth by 15 seconds.
A small squad presented challenges for the Vaqueros and the women didn’t always have a full squad of five runners.
“Injuries, illness, and the challenges of life all played roles in losing a few athletes,” noted third-year coach Scott Fickerson.
“I'm working hard to build up our squad sizes by visiting the local high school teams and seeking out cross country runners
that may be on campus, but aren’t currently running for us.
“Erika had a really tremendous season. I'm very proud of all the hard work she has put into this and really happy to see
it all pay off for her.”
Fickerson said Schaeffer hopes to compete for his alma mater, UC Davis, next year.
In the spring, Schaeffer will run the 5K, 10K and Steeplechase for the track team with a goal of qualifying for the state
championships at American River College in Sacramento.
