Probation

What is Probation?

There are 2 types of probation: Academic and Progress.

  1. Academic Probation: A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units shall be placed on academic probation if the student has earned below a 2.0 GPA in all units at SBCC. Removal from academic probation will occur when a student accumulates a 2.0 GPA or higher. A student who is on academic probation for two consecutive semesters shall be subject to disqualification. Please refer to the college catalog for additional information regarding this policy.
  2. Progress Probation: A student who has enrolled in at least 12 units shall be placed on progress probation when the percentage of all units enrolled and for which entries of "W", "I" and "NC" reaches or exceeds 50%. Removal from progress probation will occur when the percentage of units for which entries of "W", "I" and "NC" are recorded drops below 50%. A student who is on progress probation for two consecutive semesters shall be subject to disqualification.

Probation interventions may include a restriction of units taken and/or registration and a Student Success Course. Counselors are available to assist probationary students with appropriate class selection (Student Educational Plan), time management strategies, goal setting, and personal counseling. Registration "holds" may be placed on students' records. Visit the Academic Counseling Center in the Student Services Building or call (805) 730-4085. For more information click here.
