Vaqueros take on Rio Hondo in best-of-3 Regional series
SBCC will play a best-of-3 series at No. 2 Rio Hondo in Whittier on Saturday and
Sunday (May 5-6). The first game is Saturday at 1 p.m. and Game 2 is Sunday at 11
a.m. A third game will follow, if necessary, 30 minutes later.
On Tuesday, the 15th-seeded Vaqueros beat Canyons 6-5 in a 16-inning thriller in
a single-elimination Regional game. Mark Jebbia went 4-6 and delivered a walk-off
single that scored Zach Zehner with two outs in the 16th.
Shortstop Steven Reveles leads the Vaqueros in batting (.357) and RBIs (30). He's
8-14 in the last 3 games (.571).
SBCC, the WSC co-champion at 12-8, is 20-17 overall after winning six straight must-win
games. Joey Epperson is batting .329 and is 8th in the state in stolen bases with
20.
Rio Hondo is 33-3 and won the Football Conference with a 24-0 record. The Roadrunners
have won 28 in a row and have the third-best ERA in the state (2.14). Outfielder Christian
Ibarra is batting .403 and Adam Hurley is hitting .375 with 9 home runs.
Rio Hondo has two pitchers with 10-0 records -- AJ Gonzalez (1.11 ERA) and Andrew
Morales (1.63).
Jeff Walker was WSC North Coach of the Year in his first season. The Vaqueros have
received great pitching from Brendon Shoemake (7-4, 3.29 ERA), Rich McCaffrey (5-3,
3.81) and reliever Lucas Benenati (3-1, 5 saves, 3.52).
Rio Hondo's last loss was Feb. 17 to Glendale, a team SBCC beat 3-1 on April 4. Canyons
beat the Roadrunners 7-6 in the second game of the season. SBCC split two games with
Canyons.
