Turnbull picked in 30th round by White Sox

SBCC right-hander Ryan Gardner has signed a free-agent baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians and will report to rookie ball in Arizona this week.

Gardner, a second-team All-WSC choice, went 2-3 in middle relief and two starts with a 4.60 ERA. In 31 1/3 innings, he struck out 34 and walked 16.

"He's shown professional arm strength," said Vaquero coach Teddy Warrecker. "His fastball has been clocked at 93 mph. Cleveland gave him a signing bonus and they're going to pay for his final two years of school."

Kylin Turnbull, a 6-5 middle reliever, was picked in the 30th round by the Chicago White Sox. Turnbull had a 4.34 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 11 walks in 18 2/3 innings.

Warrecker said he expects Turnbull to return for his sophomore year at SBCC.

"A lot of Division 1 schools and pro clubs have shown interest in Kylin," noted Warrecker. "He's a 6-5 left-hander with a lot of potential who's been clocked at 92 mph. I think he'll return to school and could be our No. 1 starter next year."

Carlos Alonso, a former star at SBCC and the University of Delaware, was chosen in the 32nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies. He started each of his 99 games during his two years with the Blue Hens and posted the eighth-highest batting average (.385) in school history. He finished with 20 homers and 84 RBIs.
He was voted team MVP in both of his years. In 2010, he led the squad in batting (.389), doubles (20) and runs scored (62). His 16 homers tied for No. 10 on the all-time list. He had a school-record 32-game hitting streak (
April 19, 2009 to March 28, 2010) and recorded the fourth cycle in program history on April 16 against Towson.
In his first season at Delaware, Alonso earned second-team All-Conference honors after posting a .380 batting average with 20 doubles and 12 stolen bases. He became the first Blue Hen to reach base safely in every game during an entire season after recording either a hit or walk in each of UD’s 48 games.
