Three Vaqueros sign early
Edgington commits to UCSB
Three SBCC baseball players have signed National Letters of Intent to play at four-year schools, according to coach Teddy
Warrecker.
Zach Edgington, projected to be the No. 1 starter on the 2010 Vaquero squad, will continue his career at UCSB. The left-hander
went 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 50.1 innings for the Vaqueros last year, striking out 49. He was rated as one of the top left-handed
pitching prospects in Southern California and throws in the upper 80s. He was also being recruited by Maryland and San Francisco.
Edgington earned second-team All-WSC honors last season.
"He is one of the top junior college left-handed pitchers in Southern California and he brings above-average velocity and
a tremendous changeup," said UCSB pitching coach Tom Myers in a release on the Gauchos' website.
Third baseman Abe Ruiz, a transfer from Arizona State, is returning to play for the Sun Devils. Ruiz, from Pacific Grove,
Calif., hit .345 with 19 RBIs in 32 games last year for the Sun Devils, who compiled an impressive 51-14 record.
Pitcher Ryan Gardner, a former Dos Pueblos High player who was 1-1 last year with 19 strikeouts in 18.1 innings, committed
to Metro State, an NCAA Div. 2 school in Colorado. He accepted a full ride that combined academics and athletics.
The Vaqueros open their 2010 campaign on Feb. 6 at Saddleback.
