Vaqueros narrowly miss playoffs
They lead state in homers; Edgington is top pitcher
With the top home-run hitting team in California and one of the best pitching staffs, SBCC had a potent 1-2 punch in 2010.
The Vaqueros (20-16, 10-10) averaged nearly eight runs a game and set school records for homers (56) and WSC batting average
(.331). Conner Rehage, a former quarterback on the football team, hit .355 with 13 homers, missing the school record by two.
He also had a team-high 42 RBIs. Left fielder Tommy White posted the second-highest batting average in school history at .424.
The Vaquero pitchers, led by Zach Edgington and Joe McGrew, had the ninth-best ERA in the state at 3.84. The offense boasted
the second-best slugging percentage in California (.528).
After starting conference play 7-3, the Vaqueros finished 3-7 and missed the playoffs by one game. They staged a stirring
comeback on the final day against Cuesta, rallying from an 11-4 deficit with four in the eighth and three in the ninth on
Abe Ruiz' three-run homer before falling in 10 innings, 13-11.
Ruiz, who's transferring back to Arizona State, had a stellar season, batting .343 with 11 home runs.
Edgington, a sophomore left-hander who's committed to UCSB next year, had a spectacular campaign. He went 6-3 with a 2.92
ERA and ranked No. 2 in the state in strikeouts with 101. He set a school record with 21 K against Ventura and also struck
out 13 and 11 in two other games.
"We had some incredible individual performances," said coach Teddy Warrecker. "Conner Rehage basically came out of the parking
lot and he'll most likely be an All-American. Tommy White came close to setting a school record for hitting and Zach Edgington
had as dominating a pitching performance as I've seen in 10 years."
Edgington was named co-Pitcher of the Year in the WSC North. Conner Rehage was All-WSC first team, along with White, Ruiz
and catcher Steven Keller (.346, 7 HRs). Greg Selarz won the Golden Glove for pitchers.
Fielding was a problem for SBCC, which had a WSC-high 99 errors. Several Vaqueros were forced to play different positions.
"Tommy White is a catcher by trade, recovering from Tommy John surgery," noted Warrecker. "He played the heck out of left
field this year. Chris Lauritzen is not a natural shortstop, he plays second or third base and Daniel Howell is a first baseman
(he played third and hit 10 HRs). But those were the cards we were dealt.
"There were a lot of positives. The guys put their heart and soul into it but we played short-handed for a long time. Losing
Zach Chavez at shortstop early in the year really affected us. Losing Abe's ability to defend (he moved from 3B to 2B due
to a shoulder injury) and be in the field also affected us. We were a little short-handed but we were still in third place,
playing for a playoff spot on the last day of the season."
