Alternatives to Testing

NEW for SPRING 2019: Math & English assessment tests will no longer be required for a majority of students.

To check your placement status:

  1. Log onto your Pipeline account 
  2. Under the STUDENT tab, click on STUDENT RECORDS
  3. Click on VIEW COURSE PLACEMENT AND ELIGIBILITY
  4. If your placements are listed as pending, please click on the HIGH SCHOOL DATA FORM to submit the information required for placement

SBCC uses multiple measures, including high school grade point average, coursework, and specific grades for placement into Math & English courses. 

If you are not satisfied with your multiple measures placements you can: 


ENGLISH TEST ALTERNATIVES

  • SAT Scores: Score of 550 or higher on the Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) section of the SAT exam taken after Spring 2016 OR score of 500 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT exam taken before Spring 2016. (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • AP English exam score of 3 or higher (eligibility for ENG 111) If using this option, do not send in the Alternatives to Testing Verification Form. Follow these directions for submitting AP scores. 

  • ACT English exam score of 22 or higher (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) English status of “Standard Exceeded.” Note: ‘conditional ‘ status not accepted. (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • B.A. or B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. (eligibility for ENG 111)

  • CSU EPT exam score of 147 or higher (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) English exam score of 5 or higher (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • University of California AWPE exam passage. (eligibility for ENG 110)

  • Equivalent English 110 course completed at another college with a grade of “C” or higher. If using this option, do not send in the Alternatives to Testing Form. Submit  a request for coursework evaluation.

MATH TEST ALTERNATIVES 

  • AP Scores: Score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB exam (eligibility for Math 160) or the AP Calculus BC exam (eligibility for Math 200 or 210) or score of 3 or higher on the AP Statistics exam (clears new student Math assessment hold only). If using this option, do not send in the Alternatives to Testing Verification Form. Follow these directions for submitting AP scores.

  • CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) Math status of “Standard Exceeded.” Note: ‘conditional’ status not accepted (eligibility for Math 114, 117, 120, Psy 150 or Soc 125)

  • Qualifying raw score from an equivalent* MDTP Math test taken at another California Community College. *Please call SBCC Assessment staff (805) 730-4149 or email assessment@pipeline.sbcc.edu to verify test equivalency.  

  • Math course from another college, completed with a grade of “C” or higher. If using this option, do not send in the Alternatives to Testing Verification Form. Submit a request for coursework evaluation.

IF YOU HAVE ONE OR MORE OF THE ITEMS LISTED ABOVE: 

  1. Download the Alternatives to Testing Verification Form

  2. Acquire required documentation (e.g. unofficial SAT or ACT score report, transcript, etc. - details on the form).

  3. Submit Verification Form & documentation to the Assessment Office. Forms can be emailed to assessment@pipeline.sbcc.edu 

 

 **Need help checking your EAP status?

  • You can find your EAP status on the last page of your California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) report.

  • A status of "Standard Exceeded" exempts you from SBCC's English and/or Math Assessment test.

  • Note: A "Conditional" or "Standard Met/Nearly Met/Not Met" status can not be used as an alternative to testing.

  • Contact your high school counselor if you need help retrieving a copy of your CAASPP report.
