What is Articulation?
Articulation is the process of evaluating courses to determine whether a particular course offered at Santa Barbara City College
is comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of, a corresponding course at a particular CSU or UC campus.
What is an Articulation Agreement?
Each university system has its own program requirements. These requirements vary with the student's intended major. An articulation agreement is an agreement with a four-year institution that specifies which SBCC classes may be transferred to meet general education, elective, or major requirements. The purpose of articulation is to facilitate the successful transfer of students from the community colleges to the baccalaureate colleges and universities.
What are the Types of Articulation Agreements?
Course-to-Course Agreements
The purpose of a Course-to-Course agreement is to determine if a specific course taken at one college will satisfy a requirement
at another college.
General Education
General Education Breadth agreements indicate those courses that a student can complete at SBCC to satisfy the general education
requirements at the transfer campus.
IGETC
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a general education program which community college students
in California can use to satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any CSU or UC campus. For detailed information
about IGETC requirements, see the IGETC Worksheet.
CSU General Education
The CSU General education agreement is a general education program which community college students in California can use
to satisfy the lower division GE requirements for the CSU campuses. For detailed information about CSU GE requirements, see
the CSG GE Worksheet.
Major Preparation
The Major Preparation agreements specify the lower division courses required for a specific major at a specific 4-year institution.
Transferable Course Agreements
University of California Office of the President Transfer Course Agreement is a listing of courses offered at SBCC that are
transferable to the University of California.
Transfer Admissions Agreements (T.A.A.)
T.A.A. is a formal, written agreement that guarantees admission to selected 4-year institutions by satisfying specific criteria.
These criteria include courses that must be completed before transfer, grade point average required, and specific requirements
for impacted majors.
California Articulation Number System
he California Articulation Number (CAN) System is a cross-reference course identification system for many lower-division,
transferable major preparation courses commonly taught on college campuses.

"ASSIST (Articulation System Stimulating Interinstitutional Student Transfer) is a computerized student-transfer information system that can be accessed over the World Wide Web. It displays reports of how course credits earned at one California College or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California's colleges and universities and therefore provides the most accurate and up-to-date information available about student transfer in California." University of California, California State University, and California Community College courses are covered.
How can I learn more about Articulation Agreements?
SBCC maintains written articulation or course agreements with many transfer colleges and universities. These agreements are
approved by the faculty and specify how courses will be accepted at the transfer institution. Copies of these agreements are
available in the Transfer Center.
A student working closely with a counselor should be able to complete most of the lower division requirements (first two years)
of a bachelor degree program at SBCC and transfer at the junior level. Students experiencing difficulties with the transfer
of courses from Santa Barbara City College should call the Articulation Office for assistance at 805-965-0581 ext. 2784, or
email castro@sbcc.edu.
Students who wish to transfer need to become familiar with the articulation agreements. SBCC has established articulation
with selected four-year universities and colleges in general education and in specific majors. Counselors, Articulation Officer
or Transfer Center staff can provide articulation agreement information.
For additional information on articulation, contact castro@sbcc.edu.
