2-D Design and Drawing

Meet Michelle Onstot

I have always known I wanted to teach art.

I have had the pleasure of teaching various art classes here at SBCC since 2002. I have also taught at UCSB, CSU Northridge, Ventura College and ArtLab Ventura, which I co-founded.

I teach Figure Drawing, 2D Design Composition / Color Theory, Portrait Drawing, Beginning and Advanced Drawing and Figure Illustration. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching well over 100 art classes.

I love teaching! I work very hard with my students individually to help them reach their specific goals. I often write letters of recommendation for Applications and Scholarships, for which my students are regularly accepted and awarded. My students routinely win awards for their work. I myself am a socio-political mixed media artist, formerly working mainly on wood. My current series is primarily on found objects such as doors and windows.

Philosophy of Teaching

"If you are willing to put in the time and effort, you can ABSOLUTELY learn the skills you want and need to achieve your specific vision. Many people give up too easily and say “I’m just not good at art”– and it inevitably becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. A body builder doesn’t simply go to a gym once and expect to have enormous muscles. Like developing a muscle, training your eye takes time. Yes, some people love art and/or are encouraged to create at an early age. Consequently, they have practiced more so certain lessons may come easier. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of first timers, looking for a new career or hobby, who insist they don’t have it in them. It is a joy to teach them and watch them develop their technique and see the amazing work they create. To the practiced student, no matter how much experience you have, you can always improve. We never stop learning. I do my best to work with my students individually customizing my assignments to meet the various needs."
