Barbara Vilander

Art History

Meet Professor Vilander

After graduating with my BA in Psychology from UCSB, the opportunity arose for me to work as the Education Coordinator for the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego. I was so impressed by the way MoPA’s Director, Arthur Ollman, used his knowledge of art and photography to educate museum guests that I decided to return to school to study art history. I went to UC Davis, where I got my MA in Art History and then continued on to UCSB, where I earned my doctorate in the History of Art with a major in the History of Photography. Most importantly, in graduate school I learned that I enjoyed teaching even more than museum work. At SBCC I have enjoyed teaching Visual Literacy, American Art, History of Art:  Prehistoric to Gothic, History of Art:  Renaissance to Modern and History of Photography. My dissertation was published by the University of Arizona Press under the title: Hoover Dam: The Photographs of Ben Glaha
